My mate has a J with around 50K on the clock. It generally runs sweet i.e. will complete one of our 2 night away trips easily. There is only some slight noise from the engine but nothing too unpleasant. He went riding recently and decided to check/top up the engine oil. I gather he did this by pouring about a litre in the case using the overflow as an indicator of fullness. Anyhow, he was riding and after about 30 minutes, smoke began pouring out what looked like all exhausts and there was also oil coming out the pipes/dripping onto the wheel. Quite impressive to look at apparently . He let it sit for a while and she then started easily, idled well and then ran nicely. Since then he has had a bit of oil coming out of the pipes but no return of the excessive smoking. The bike continues to start and idle well plus she is running quite nicely.
Question: Do you think this was a case of over-enthusiastic oil filling and the bike trying to clear itself or could it suggest a seal(s) is about to go.

Mike, the big question in MY mind is: What KIND of oil did he add to the gearbox ?? Synthetic ?? Dino ?? Was it engine oil ?? Or was it gear oil ?? What weight ?? What was in the gearbox BEFORE he added the new stuff ??

Thanks for the thoughts Rick. I have spoken to him and it does look as though he put whatever was handy in there and it certainly wasn't a match with what was already present. Added to this, I'm now sure he overfilled it and the dear old Girl was doing her best to push the extra stuff out before she choked to death. Since disgorging her excess bile, the bike has been running sweet. I've had a chat to him about gear oil. Looks like he's going to drain and start from scratch with clean stuff - carfeully measured of course .

The problem with the transmission on a GT750 is that the oil does not simply fill the clutch cover area like most engines. It goes into the centre section of the engine first due to a cross pipe built into the main cases, so any oil added takes time to flow around the internals first before it heads towards the level screw in the clutch cover.
Its easier to drain the cases, measure out the 2200cc, pour that in, let it sit for about 15 minutes then check the level.
Why not use the correct oil, it definitely saves costly repair issues.
It sounds as if your buddy's probs are solved, Mike......
and equally as important is that he's learned a valuable lesson about his Buffalo.
As Allan posted above, it can take quite awhile for that oil to work its way
around to the correct places in a Buffalo tranny.
