GT 380 LACK OF POWER AT LOW REVS

Post by BIGDAVE »

hi my second post regarding my newly bought gt 380M,i covered about 40 miles on saturday and loved every mile, one thing she seems a bit guttless and a bit slow off the mark at low revs,(pulling away) also does not like pulling in sixth gear,is this generally what the 380 is like, but at higher revs she pulls like a train,i have fitted new plugs and points, she had new carb kits fitted when i bought her, have not checked the timing, which is another job on the list,i have also set the carbs.i did read somewhere that 6th gear was more of an overdrive,i am probably spoilt with the bottom end power of my gsx 1400,i am so glad i bought her,and she does cause a lot of interest when out and about.
many thanks
Dave.

380s don't really like less than 3,000rpm on the tacho ... they will bimble around happily in the 3-5,000 rpm region very smoothly indeed, but don't expect any real 'pull' in this range if you're above 3rd gear.

On standard pipes etc, it will come alive at 5K and pull hard round to 7.5, then tail off a little. There's usually little to be gained by chasing the redline. 6th gear is an overdrive, don't expect the bike to pull it uphill or against a strong headwind without having to knock down into 5th.

In most circumstances, 5th is your usual 'top' gear. In neutral conditions and on the flat, you should see 90mph on the speedo fairly quickly in 5th, and it may get up to 95. Changing into 6th will usually LOSE speed unless it's a strong tailwind or a gentle downhill.

Don't forget the bike weighs nearly 400 lb (more than an R1) and has 35bhp if you're lucky :)

Pull the baffles and make sure they are clear & clean, they are sensitive to this. Also worth having a poke up the pipes with a bit of bamboo or similar, they can get cruddy inside. Check the airfilters too, they should leave a trace of oil on a clean finger (but not be dripping with oil).

Enjoy her 8)

What he said, I posted about the same results as you when I first had mine running, I did a top end which helped but nothing spectacular.
