Tire Sizing (plus or stick w/ stock sizing?) (GT550)

Post by imquattro »

Sorry if this horse has been beaten before....
I'll be looking for new tires before this project's done.
Just wondering if I should stick w/ the stock sizing (110/90/18 -rear; 100/90/19 -front).
If anything, I'd be looking for something wider in the rear but I'd rather hear what yall have to say first.
Thanks in advance!
(Wish there was a sticky FAQ on these bikes)

The REAL stock sizes still do exist (3.25x19 and 4.00x18) - but they are pricey for good ones. I have been using Metzler Lasertrac - stock sizes for several years on my GT380, GT550, GT750, and CB750F Supersport. I like these tires because of their high silica content- it helps give a good grip to the road, as I live in Northern Vermont where all road are twists and turns. The downside to these tires, besides price, is that I get about 5000 miles for the rear tire, and 7500 for the front. Good luck!

The two bikes I have, a 74 and a 72 had two different sets of tires on them (both 25+ years old, cracking, & not road worthy).
The 74 had:
130/90/18 -rear tire
MJ90-19 -front tire (first I've seen that type of sizing)

The 72 had:
3.25-19 -Front
4.00-18 -rear

Just trying to determine what size to go with in the end, the bike will not be seeing a lot of road time, and when it does, it will be more touring than twisties and performance.
