My latest find

Just bought this one today. 76 GT500. This makes my 5th GT500 now......not to mention the 5-6 other t500's. Its a sickness. 8) This one runs, and looks pretty good, but does need a carb cleaning, and the usual sorting out. Mostly all original, except for the seat recover, an aftermarket petcock, and of course its missing the side cover as they always are. Only 10k miles.

Very nice indeed :up: :up: I was wondering if you could post a photo of the top of the tank please as I was interested in the placement of the original brake fluid warning label, as well as any other warning labels there might still be. I still need to add them onto the 1977 model (http://www.oldjapanesebikes.com/1977_GT500/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) I just finished putting together. Thanks !!

Do you need a replacement battery mat/protector ?

I'm guessing all the past T500 owners have those side covers laying in their garages, probably being used as screw holders or something. I got lucky this time , I just purchased a NOS side cover from Canada off ebay, in this exact color. Hopefully it will arrive in good shape. Cost $100 though.

Ian, here a couple warning label pics from another of my gt500's. There's also supposed to be a label on the right front fork, but it was missing on this bike.

What a find, I just hope mine looks nearly that good when I've finished restoring it! The chrome work looks in real good order which I think is the first thing to look out for.

Is that correct the tire pressure decal on the lamp assy??
Were they not on the fender?

The three GT500's I've seen all had the tire pressure label on the rear lamp bracket as per the photo above and not on the fender as seen on the triples. No idea about what was done on earlier T500 models.

Same here, all the GT500s I have seen, have the tire pressure decal on the taillight bracket instead of the fender.

Got the bike up and running good. Previous owner had the carb vent lines and petcock vacuum line all screwed up. Runs great now, but does have the typical shifting problem between 4th and 5th. Seems every GT500 I've ridden requires a double shift to make it into 5th. Chrome on the bike isn't too bad. I did swap out the front fender with another because it had lots of rust bubbles coming thru the chrome. I also need to buy some new header pipes for it, as those are rusty on the back sides. The new side cover arrived, and matches perfectly. A little more cleanup and detail work and this should be a sweet ride.

I have the same problem on mine between 4th and 5th and I was ready to split the crankcase to take a better look. It sounds from your post though that this is an inherant problem. Is it a worn gear selector fork that's causing it, do you know?

The shifter is stupidly long and for me even with my size 13 feet still give me problems between 4 and 5 with a know good gearbox. You have to make a concerted effort on the shift and usually know problems. I have had success with a shorter shifter or rearsets.

My GT500 has the same 4th to 5th double shift, sometimes just keep pulling up and it shifts. Also if when pulling up to stop, downshift to 4th, let out the clutch for a moment, then I can smoothly and quietly downshift all the way to neutral or even first. If I try to downshift directly from 5th, it ain't happening! I have to come to a complete stop and then it is CLUNK, CLUNK, shifting down. Bike had 9000 miles when I got it, now has 19500, and still does the same. Replaced clutch plates, re-adjusted throwout screw and cable, clutch works fine, just a characteristic.......

I also have this same problem with two different motors.
T500R (Stock)
T500J (Next Stock Project)
