Stock exhaust loud? Is it supposed to burble while driving?
I just have no idea what these bikes are supposed to sound like. I have looked at videos on youtube however you can't truly tell how loud they are.
I have been driving my GT550 around town yesterday and it just seems to be somewhat loud. Not open Harley pipes loud, just louder than my old 75 Honda 750 that I used to own. Are these louder than a 4 stroker just in general?
And while driving and coming off the throttle, it seems to burble while coming back to idle. And is it supposed to return to idle slowly? It revs up quickly.

two strokes are generally louder than four strokes especially when they hit the power band - if yours is very noisy though make sure you have the baffles fitted in the end of the silencers or else it will sound like an old boat!! The burbling sound- they are supposed to make and thats part of the reason why we all love riding them.

LOL, I just don't know. I have never had a 2 stroke motorcycle before. Never even driven a dirt bike before. The only 2 strokes I have are a pair of Yamaha 2 stroke 3wheelers that I have yet to take out in the trails. I have only driven them in my back yard.
I just wasn't quite sure what was normal when it comes to these bikes.

Pull out the baffles and make sure they are wraped. If not, most dealers generally have the material on hand for the dirt bike crowd. You can get enough to wrap all four for under $10. You will need some soft wire too.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Well I think I found part of my problem. One of the baffles is missing on the lower middle pipe on the right side. I thought it was in there but it isn't there now, I wonder if it blew out while I was driving.

I also pulled out one of the baffles and there is absolutely no old stuffing in there whatsoever. No wonder its rather loud.

I have a brand new GT550 baffle, still unopened in box. Can't remember though if it's for middle or outer. If you are interested i can open the box and get the part number.

Thanks for the offer, I first need to see if I can figure out how to get a new/used baffle to fit inside the exhaust first of all since my mounting is rusted out.

After I lost my second baffle, I started wiring them in

How did you wire them in?

drill a hole, insert lockwire, twist until satisfied.
...that's what I did after losing one.

Well I took my lower muffler off. I also found my baffle. The baffle just self destructed from so much rust that it fell apart into like 7 little inch long chunks of rust. I got a new muffler from my fairly close salvage yard and that cost me 50 dollars. The muffler that I got had no rust whereas my muffler was all rusted out and had no more structure inside for holding the baffle.
I took the baffle out of my new muffler and it was in good shape, slightly rusty but structurely sound.
Put it on my bike and the sound difference was quite noticeable . No more loud popping from that chamber and everything just seemed to smooth out a bit.
Funny thing is that the powerband seems to have moved up a bit? It is smoother however I have to rev the bike up a bit more to get the same response from it. A tad odd.
