What kind of oil do I use for the clutch/tranny?

Post by bobotech »

The book calls for 20/40, haven't seen that anywhere. Can I just use a modern 10w40 automotive oil for now?

And to fill it, I just remove the cap next to the oil pump, and undo the fill level bolt next to the kickstarter and fill until it starts weeping out of the fill level hole, right?

Oil  There are probably more opinions and views about oil for these bikes than there are (insert your local currency here) in your national debt ! :D

This is for a GT550 ? I can buy low detergent, non-extended life motorcycle rated 20/40 oil here which is what I use in mine - others use actual gear oil at about an 80w90 weight. Other will join in I'm sure, but check your local bike shops. 8)

I run Penzoil 10W-40 in mine. Both the GT550 and the GS1000. Look at it this way Bob (that's an assumption on my part), ALL the oils today are far superior than they were in the 70's. Fill er up and don't look back. I have used 10W-40 in the GS1000 since I bought it in 95 with 13.000 miles on the clock. It now has 26,500 miles on it and I have had no oil related issues whatsoever.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Oh, oh.....another tranny lube question.

For myself, bobotech, I'm a big fan of GEAR oil in my stroker trannies.
My 550 is currently running Agip gear oil in what, IIRC, they call a 10W40 viscosity with an SAE rating of GL5. It seems to give me the best clutch lockup "feel" and shifting characteristics of all the gear oils I've tried over the years.....
and believe me, I've tried most of them over the last 20+ years.

Oil questions will bring dozens of replies... None of them are wrong... I have over 168K GT750 miles and use the 10-40 motor oil in my crankcase and never had any problems.

Allen...... Not useless, can be used as a bad example !!
