Extreme Embarrassment

Post by Digger »

At the age of twelve, I was routinely stripping bikes to their bare bones, fettling, rebuilding & riding them away.
Now, at 55, I seem to have lost all basic spannering capabilities

Dropping the wheels out of the T500 for rebuilding, rear came out fine, spindle draws out by hand...... but the front!! :x

The spindle is stiff, and moves only with gentle hammer taps on a socket extension. Fine, but the only extension I have with a sufficiently small bore is just too short to drive it all the way out :( ... Does the spindle sit in a blind bearing? It seems to be seized onto the spindle thus preventing it passing through the fork.

Any tips? i.e. a ready-made bit of household gubbins I can use as a drift?

Thanks folks.

Sounds like the axle was not greased last time it was fitted. I've found the engine mount bolts make a good drift for these occasions.

Public thanks to my neighbour John - 64p bit of dowel - two taps with the hammer and out she came.

Wheels going for polishing & rebuilding today, grease at the ready for their return

Thanks again.

I now have a spare tin of Copaslip in the bedroom.
Am I doing it right?

John, you really need to be more discerning. Nuts benefit from different lubricants than shafts. Nuts are to stop them seizing of course.
