I was welding some box sections this morning.
parts of it was painted in thick cream( got the box's given).
god knows what it was.
but afterwards I felt nausea coming on . had to stop.
it took a couple of hours to clear up.
moral of the story clean all part thoroughly before attemp to weld or burn.
lesson learned

When I worked in the bodyshop in a Buick dealer many moons ago I was using a burning torch to help dismantle the wrecked front end on a Riviera. I was burning some rusty nasty battery box bolts out and inhaled with my head in there. Big lung full of sulphuric acid and it felt like I was drowning for a minute. Just couldn't get a breath. Took a bit but I started breathing again. Learned my lesson for sure.

I've welded galvo many a times but had a little fan to blow the fumes away.
the old welders used to tell me drink a pint of milk before welding galvo....

One of the guys that used to do my welding used a full on respirator if I asked him to weld zinc plated parts. the other welder didn't but he died of cancer a few years ago. Not sure if there's a connection but makes you think.
it is a bit late for me but not to late though.
when I was young we had no health and safety laws like we have now.
I've worked on some terrible stuff in my time.
ah young and ignorance.
I'm probably paying for it now.

Yep, I had a welder buddy install a new axle assembly on my bike trailer about 10 years ago. He was surprised to find the deck of the trailer was made of galvanized formed channel pieces (so was I !!) under the paint.
He just about had a fit......and proceeded to explain the dangers of welding galvanized anything.
We got a big fan to blow the fumes away and he did a nice job in the end.....and I learned something new at no cost/injury to anyone. Since then I've always been cautious about putting torch heat on any coated pieces. As John says, it's better to clean the part first.....
