What Have YOU Read Lately.....

Post by H2RICK »

...about motorcycles, that is ??

I just finished Phil Schilling's omnibus motorcycle book called "The Motorcycle World". It was published in 1974 so the parts of the book dealing with the "present" are a time capsule of the early 70's. An interesting read with lots of great pics.

Lately I've been reading more aviation related books, but the last motorcycle books I read were there three books in Ted Simon's "Jupiter" series. Great read and a very interesting man. He's famous for motorcycle travel, has circled the world twice on motorcycles, yet doesn't seem at all to be a motorcycle guy. After I read "Jupiter's Travels" I rode the bike down to KY to meet him and watch his slide show about the journeys.

Currently reading the autobiography of the racer Mick Grant, which is very good.

Also highly recommended is 'Stealing Speed' by Mat Oxley, the story of how Walter Kaaden developed the modern 2-stroke, and how Ernst Degner took the secrets with him to Suzuki. It's excellent.

'Stealing Speed' by Mat Oxley
Yes, Craig, that's a book that needs to be in my library. I'll have to check with the local big-box bookstore to see if it's available through them. Thanks for reminding me.

Recently finished 'Geoff Duke - In Pursuit of Perfection' and also picked up a 1950 issue of 'TT Races Motor Cycles Vintage Castrol Geoff Duke' for my Dad. It is a walk through with descriptions about when to tuck your head in in the IOM course, and which humped back bridges to be careful about ! Sample below. Both are quite good reads.

Am now half way through Ray Battersby's book 'Team Suzuki' - also quite good. 8)

:wth:  :wth: :o

racers truly are a different breed. It is incredible that people like Geoff Duke lapped the TT course at a whisker under 100mph in the mid-50s, with about 60bhp at the back wheel, on skinny ribbed tyres, and with EXTREMELY variable road surfaces.
