shifting problem gt750

Post by smokin »

When I put together my 72 GT750 it shifted into first gear from neutral without any problem now when I shift into first gear from neutral I have to push the shift lever down and hold it for 10, 15 sec until it shifts into first, when I'm moving and down shift into first there's no problem, only when it's in neutral is when it won't shift. I pulled the clutch to see if the shift cam was working and it will not click into gear it moves freely, could this be a shift cam problem or a drum problem?

It's setup as pictured when I push the shift lever down to first gear the shift cam doesn't seem to lock into the drum or the shifter isn't turning the shift cam all the way down, I don't see anything blocking it and the cams are not stuck I have another shift drum so I can change the cams out this weekend.

In the drums spring rachet mechanism the two spring loaded pins have a flat side and a round side to them, make sure the round side faces the pawls
Two strokes, its just that simple.

I replaced the shift cam and it seem to be OK when I put it together, started it up still had a 5 sec delay in shifting into first when I shift back and forth it's fine but when it sits in neutral for a little bit then it hard to shift, I think the problem might be in the neutral stop plug that keeps the shift drum in neutral, when I rebuilt the engine it was missing, the previous owner had taken it out I'm thinking because of this reason I'll take a look or replace the spring with a lighter one, do you think this could be the problem?

Yep, that was the problem I replaced the neutral plug spring with a lighter one now it shifts into gear without any problem and I can shift into neutral while I'm rolling to a stop, I had gotten the spring and plug from a parts bike because mine was missing not sure if that was the original spring that comes with suzuki engines but if your having a problem shifting into first try replacing that spring.
