GT750 Starter Removal

I think it is time to remove the starter motor on my 1976 GT750A and replace the brushes. As I understand this is no easy task and the radiator must be drained. Can someone detail the removal process
so I will know if I'm up to the job? Please note any gotchas if there are any. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

I'll try and the experts can chime in and correct it as required.

Disconnect battery

Drain coolant

Remove carbs

Remove by pass hose from the rear of the block

Remove SRIS line that passes through the starter cover

Remove starter cover

Remove Stand up connection that the by-pass hose was connected to

Remove the two starter mounting bolts plus the cable

Pull starter to the right and remove it.

Strip and clean starter and then assembly is reverse of removal

:up: That's it......did my starter motor last year....just a lot of stuff to remove to do the job,by the way...to get the carburettors off,you'll have to remove air box...slides out to the right,maybe a good idea to remove oil pump arm from the carburettors as well as oil pump,so you don't snag it on anything ! 8)

8) Hi,just thought a carby overhaul would be a good idea while they are off the machine,if they haven't had a recent rebuild,that is.....or leave alone if everything is running alright...

These 3 procedures can be a bear -- especially if there is rust present. The third one is the worse. Might be rusted in place. I can't remember if there is a gasket under the stand up tube, but you must get a good seal on reassembly. Liquid gasket or RTV mifgt be needed here.

There's a crush washer under the standpipe - the same as a spark plug I think. I haven't had one of those stick too hard, but it's all fiddly dirty work for sure.

The carbs were gone through recently but I'm thinking I might want to install the anti-surge jet mod. Any opinions on that?

As to removing those components, there is no visible rust on the outside and the hoses look fairly recent. But I guess you don't know until the cover is removed - I'll cross my fingers on that one. Again, thanks for the heads up!

Good idea to do that mod while the carbs are off. Taps are available on line or form your local hardware store and the jets are normal Mikuni BS30/97 air jets. http://pinkpossum.com/GT750/carb/BS40carbs.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hah! Here it is 7 years later and just getting around to replacing the starter. I'm trying to understand removing the Siris line that passes through the starter cover. Can someone talk me through that procedure?

Disconnect the upper end under the theromstat housing, then remove the starter cover so you can remove the lower clip. Then twist it to pull it off the standpipe.

Easy as pie.
