T500 - Thread Repair Question

I pulled the heads and cylinders from a parts engine. Several of the smaller (8mm?) holes for the studs that hold down the head are bunged-up. Does anyone know if this is a common problem? I suspect they can be heli-coiled but am not sure if it's worth it or not (I have another parts engine I can use.)

Advice, opinions, etc. appreciated as usual. :?

Yes it is common. I would time-sert them instead of helicoil. Helicoils I am not very fond of.

I've never used them, are they hard to use? Where does one get them?

I like these - there's not much room between some of the holes and the edge of the cylinder but this type of repair insert looks like it was custom made for that type of application. Very cool. (Thanks Eric for the info.)

Bill bunn also repairs striped threads in cyclinders. They get the coils in straight and will also weld up badly damaged holes, drill, and tap.
