T500 crank

Post by Suzsmokeyallan »

The time is now fast approaching where i need to change out the seals and o-rings on my Titan crank before i can put it back into the soon to be restored main engine cases.
I am going to attempt to CHEAT a bit by pulling the middle of the crank apart only.
That means getting the middle bearing off by only separating the middle jounal shaft off the crank itself, leaving the two lower ends intact.
This should be interesting; ive seen a few separators people have made but i believe i can follow a slightly different road on this.
Anyone here who has done this before care to share some thoughts on the matter???

No takers I guess Allan. Are you doing this yourself?

BTW, where are you sourcing parts from? My T500 has never been apart but I might be working on it later this winter.

I still have to make up the 'extractor press' which i have not done yet, other restoration things are getting in the way for now.
Basically its primary purpose is to separate the middle crank journal so i can get that bearing out.
Once its apart then i can change the seals and o-rings align it and press it back together in the regular press.
This refitting process will require some centre spacer collars which i also have to make up. These will be placed in the area around the inside of one flywheel journal on the pressure side so they stay straight when pressing from that end.
As for parts,,,over the past few years i have slowly been able to find all the parts i need for my 69 Titan restoration.
Most of them came from ebay while some really hard to find items came from a few board members who im very grateful to.
Luckily the mains and lower ends on my crank are really good so i dont need any rods or bearings, just swap out the seals and o-rings and we are good to go.

Sounds like a challenging project. Do you know if T500 pistons are the same as the outside GT750 pistons? I've seen this insinuated in some fleabay listings and was wondering. I'm considering racing my Titan and might need to upgrade to forged pistons.

Its not challenging, i just need to get the parts made up to sort out the crank. Its more a case of making time to get the materials ready for the 'process'.
Besides the Cobra windowed pistons, the Titan ones are supposed to be the same as the GT ones. They are still available from Suzuki, although some of the oversizes have to be purchased as a set with the rings included.
You will also need a left and a right for the Titan.

Good luck finding everything you need then. I'm not set up to do that kind of work although I keep looking at presses in the tool catalogs that come around. I just found out this summer that a good crank guy only lives about 45 minutes from me (Stan Gardiner) so I can save shipping costs/worries.

Bump.

Just wondering if you've had a chance to tackle this yet?

Nope im still bead blasting parts getting them allocated for paint so i can do a batch of colour at a time.
To add to this its the Titan cases im working on at present that are for that very same crank to fit into.

The process was all set out in Muzza's excellent website.

http://www.ozebook.com/compendium/t500_files/crank.htm

It describes how the crank center was split and includes drawings
