1967 X6 Transmission

Help ! Please I have a 1967 X6 Hustler just had the crank rebuilt now I am trying to reassemble the engine however I had to remove the transmission shafts to clean the gearbox sump long story short I cannot get the shift forks or drum to slide the gears right Gearbox was fine before I removed the shafts now it just will not shift properly something must be out of sync. and I cant figure it out Any help would be appreciated Thanks Barry !
