Most of the aftermarket coils don't bolt up to the stock coil brackets.

Rex Caunt Racing has coils that work with the stock coil brackets.
They are available thru his website & often are available via eBay.
More info is here: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=4824&p=108223&hili ... ng#p108223

He currently has them listed on eBay as a set of 3 coils for your bike:

im basically replacing some of the older elctrics... i have a rectifier and voltage reg... on the way.
the bike runs fine the way it is... am i overthinking it if to update the coils(or preventative maintenance) or follow the not broke dont fix it mentality.

My own tuppence worth - 'yes'. They seldom go wrong, and so long as they haven't over heated at some point and cracked the cases, they will probably last longer than I will. :D The only thing to considervis possibly at some point replacing the HT leads which is not difficult to do at all. See this link, about half way down the page:

The Rex Caunt coils should produce a better spark. High performance coils (Dyna, Mikes XS, etc.) produce a much better spark but they don't fit your coil brackets. Another option is an electronic ignition system.

If your bike is running fine & there are no cracks in the coil cases then using the existing stock coils would be a reasonable choice.

As oldjapanesebikes said, the HT leads can go bad. The spark plug caps have resistors in them & can go bad too. Both are replaceable.

Switching to modern high performance spark plugs is another way to get more out of your ignition system. Either the cap or the plugs should have resistors but not both.
The Stock plug caps have resistors. NGK sells resistor & non-resistor plug caps.
Not sure what heat range plug you are using.
Good choices for resistor plugs would be NGK BR8EIX or BR7EIX.
Good choice for non-resistor plugs would be NGK B8EGV. (or the discontinued B7EVX or B7EV)

Personally, I have two bikes with Newtronics electronic ignition, a few with the Rex Caunt coils & the rest are stock. Am gradually switching them all over to modern high performance spark plugs.

If your bike is running fine, then any of these options is ok.

If eveything on the bike was fine, the bike had the Oregon rectifier & regulator, and I was going to spend around another $100, then I'd replace the stock battery with an AGM or gel battery & get a BetteryTender Jr. Then at the next tuneup, I'd switch to modern high performance plugs.
