LED won't flash with eng. Run.

All to do with wiring, charging or just trying to figure out whats gone wrong.

LED won't flash with eng. Run.

Post by Allan k »

Hey guys. I'we fitted led turn signals on my gt 550 cafe. I also fitted an automobile LED flasher Unit called a 'No load' flasher. It Works just fine with engine off, But once started, it just lights up, it won't flash. If i raise rpm it flashes very fast, like 60 times Per second. I have tried fitting a condenser between positive and negative to flatten out the power that this old bike May give, But No difference

It's probably not that the voltage is noisy (which is what a capacitor would try to resolve), but more likely the flasher unit doesn't like the variable voltage that early Suzuki's produce.

With the RPMs up (and stock rectifier and regulator), voltage can go well beyond the typical 13.8VDC that a modern automobile regulator puts out. This is likely your issue.

A quick search came up with this discussion that talks about what you can do about it:

This thread has info about a LED flasher that works. Also has info on how to get turn signal instrument light to work correctly.
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5305&p=113303" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Super Brights LED flasher is claimed to work from 10 to 15 volts.

The LED flasher you got might also be OK.
Might have problem with the voltage regulator, rectifier or alternator. Use a multimeter to check voltage at idle & high rpm.
(See the thread I mentioned. It discusses charging problems.)

Is your battery in good enough shape for the electric starter to start the bike?
If it can run the starter than its ok.
If it can't run the starter then low voltage at idle could be due to the battery.

If the voltage at high rpms exceeds 15V, then the voltage regulator is likely to need adjusting/replaced, or
there is a problem with the wiring.

Let us know how the voltage tests work out if you need more help.

Batt is brand new and Will easy turn engine over and starts at just a touch of the start button.

Have Been driving 200km over a few days now and still good power. So everything seems to be ok.
