Does anyone rechrome pipes in the states ?

I sent some parts to guy not too long ago. Was very happy with quality and price. Unfortunately, he doesn't do used exhaust. I'm sure many others don't as well. Due to a used exhaust contaminating the process. But, I would think that someone out there has to ? I'm sure it's a lot more money. Any experiences, where and cost ?

I've had good luck having two stroke exhaust pipes re-chromed at Custom Plating Specialist Inc., located in Brillion, WI. There's no big secret to doing them- they use expanding rubber plugs to seal the ends up, submerge them in a water tank first to make sure that they're sealed.

Costs vary, of course. I seem to remember a pair of Yamaha stock R5 350 pipes ran me around $400 about three years ago. The owner Terry Meeks is easy to deal with, and knows his business- give him a call and see what he says.

Much appreciated. That's a reasonable price. I would like to see pics of those pipes. Would like to see what the stock ones look like chromed on the bike just out of curiosity. I have spec II expansions on mine. I just got done polishing the cans on them within the last couple of days. The aluminum was so oxidized from the previous owner having done nothing to them. That I honestly thought for a while that he had sprayed them with a gray primer. Lots of work. But, they look like chrome now. I bet the stock pipes look nice chromed.

No problem. The pipes on this Yamaha are long one peice with seamed silencers- they do car bumpers, so their tanks are big enough to handle them. The killer for you would be the added shipping costs back and forth, but I'm very satisfied with the quality of the work.

Wow, that seems like a pretty fair price to me. I'm thinking of trying to get a set of stock pipes for my T350 re-chromed, and I got one quote for $400 each ! And a few guys who won't touch 2-stroke pipes at all. So I'm definitely going to check with these guys. Thanks for the great tip!

Impressive looking re-chrome job on the very nice looking RD350.
Lucky for me I now have 4 decent looking Mufflers that won't need rechroming but I do have a couple of other smaller parts that I haven't been able to find to replace, so I may have them rechromed.

Obviously you can't hold this place to the price I'm trying to remember from 4 years ago, now. But they did not charge $500 and they do 2 stroke pipes if they can seal them for the tanks. It's worth checking into and I was happy with all of their work and would use them again.

@SW550- my little R5 takes offence at being referred to as an RD350- it's younger brother.
Just like the Suzuki street bikes of the 70's, the Yamahas came with tons of chrome that was poorly done originally. You quickly realize how much there is when you have to refinish it all!

Most chrome shops won't touch 2 stroke exhaust because it contaminates their solution and screws up the chrome process. I would go with Classic Components. This is the best route to getting used 2 stroke pipes re-chromed. To chrome a new raw steel pipe or chamber it's $165-$190. That includes polishing. Add 10% to have the old chrome removed and hot tanked. 2 stroke exhaust has to be hot tanked to remove the oil and gunk inside the pipe. All you need to do is remove the baffle.
