Suggestion for a tool to compress stock forks ?

Im adding a one inch spacer to preload my stock fork springs. Problem is, once I have the cap into place. It's very difficult to hold it where it needs to be in order to install the retainer C clip. I need a tool to hold the cap down. With the 1 inch spacer there is a considerate amount of additional compression. I need to think of a tool or method that is narrow enough that once the cap and spring is compressed into place. I can still fit the C clip around that tool into the tube. What ever tool or method I use, the fork still needs to remain somewhat vertical or the oil will leak out or I'll have no access to install the C clip. I have no hydraulic press, etc. Nor will I buy anything expensive for this little task. If I can't think of a small tool or method that will work. I'll scrap the idea. Any suggestions on how or what I can use to accomplish this alone would be appreciated.

Your springs may bind with a 1 inch spacer when you bottom them out, try cutting an inch off the springs and adding a 1 inch spacer. This will firm up the springs by making it shorter and help you out.

Or try a half inch spacer and see how that affects the forks first.

I tried using a shorter spacer, anything under 1 inch doesn't provide enough preload. The stock springs were designed to get the cap and c clip on with no hassle. Equals absolutely no preload without something to compress the spring a little. It takes at least an inch to get minimal preload. The springs do not bind when bottomed out and if I cut off an amount of spring, I will lose what preload I gained. Then that turns into a guessing game with cutting the springs. Good suggestion, but too much guess work.

I used to do something like this on my old dirtbike, but instead of a spacer I used old Chevy small block valve springs to adjust preload. You may have to cut the valve springs to fit your needs but at least you won't be hacking your original GT's springs. Just a thought...

Im not having problems adjusting or adding preload. I've accomplished that. I can't find a way to get the cap and C clip on.

I found a way to do it. Don't ask how, but I accomplished it.

I dont have one of those caps handy to see , but was wondering if it could be drilled and tapped for a bolt ? put a metal disk under the cap and thread the bolt in till you get the preload you need and the cut the bolt to that length so it can be threaded all the way down .

put the legs in yokes and use a two legs extracter/puller too push......... simples
