Gt750A 1976

Post by tz375 »

Someone has to start off, so here's an A model I completed last year or was it the year before, or maybe the one before that....

Every nut bolt, seat hinge, rear pegs, etc were cleaned and re zinc plated. Frame and swingarm were stripped an painted gloss black. Bodywork was left in the original finish.

New bronze swingarm bushes were fitted along with new chain, sprockets, brake pads, shoes, air filter, exhaust packing, carb jets, and a pair of Bridgestone BT45s. Crank was rebuilt by Bill Bune in MN with new seals. The rods and main bearings were fine. It turned out that the crank seals could have stayed in there, but you can't tell until they are removed and then it's too late.

Water pump was rebuilt with new bearing and seals.

Heres my 750 A model in Canada, a constant work in progress when im near to it anyways.
So far ive rebuilt the ft forks, fitted new H.L ears and lower covers, tapered head bearings, repainted both triple trees, repaired the seat lock and added a steering lock that now works with all matching keys.
I also refurbished and repainted the front calipers and the master cylinder, re-zinced all the related bolts and fittings and fitted new brake hoses, disc pads and the related rubber parts are also new.
A new clutch perch and new levers, a new clutch cable, a new tach cable, a new speedo cable, new mirrors and damper bushings and new grips were also added.
Also added was a Euro spec GSX1100 handlebar, a rad crash bar that was in better shape than what was on the bike and i repaired the plastic rad cover and repainted it.
Then i polished the two sprocket covers and refurbished the alternator cover, added all new tank rubbers, a new sprocket up front, serviced the carbs and did the air jet mod with new intake boots on both sides.
A new chain, a new chain guard, a new rear tyre, rezinced the rear peg assys and replaced both inner pipes and the right one as well with better looking used units.
Plus i have refurbished the baffles, and fitted an NOS factory luggage rack,,,,,, the list goes on when i return.

I snapped off this photo of my A model bike this summer after it had done an extra 2000 miles.
The main reason i'm posting this is because at this viewing angle it represents the bikes design lines very well.

Looks like this is going to be a A model thread. Here's mine, rebuilt motor with 1'st over pistons, cleaned up the ports, crank seals, NOS front fender, rear fender, air box covers, instrument covers, Hagons, headlight ears, rear turn signals, chain guard. I repainted frame, bronze swingarm bushings, tapered steering head bearings. I put '73 model forks on it because original ones were shot and these were the first ones I found. Lester's had been glass blasted and painted when I got the bike, I stripped them again and used aluminum engine paint. Paint job by K&K. The local dealer had several parts and a few are on the bike at a good price too.

New here, but have had my '76 since April of this year. It's sat in my garage waiting for me to give it some attention, but I've been spending most of my time on my touring bike. :)

So far, new baffles (they were missing), some look-alike grips, a new seat that was advertised as "ugly" from ebay, and a good coat of Simple Green to remove the years of caked on oil. I'm planning on riding it in an upcoming ride that is mostly old vintage or unique bikes, which is called the Slimey Crud Run. It's twice a year in Wisconsin.

Next order of business is to reroute the brake lines the PROPER way (inside the forks). The former owner removed the rim to have a new tire mounted, and for some reason didn't put everything back together properly. I have the brackets and just need to put the time into doing it right.

Here's how it looked when I bought it:

Not too much of an improvement, but still better than it was. As you can see in the pics I am missing the left side red reflector. I see bikes with both amber and red reflectors, so I may opt for amber since the red ones are not available. I'd also like to have it repainted in orange, but haven't officially decided yet. (There seems to be conflicting info on the web as to what colors were available in 1976.)

Red reflectors are still available from Suzuki for one of the GS750 models, and they are almost identical. I wish I remembered which year model they came from.....

Hmm... I'll have to look around ebay and compare pics. (Parts are usually cheaper through the dealer but ebay has nice pics.) Maybe someone else reading this thread would know which one is similar.

Here's my GT750 as of today. I took the tank and side covers down to the paint shop. It's being painted House of Kolor Kandy Lime Gold over Nova Orange fine metallic. Should look close to the orange color that was offered that year, but I used Allan Tucker's 76 as inspiration.

Between now and the time I get the parts back, I will be putting time into cleaning up the skeletal remains.. :)

Wow Michelle the bike certainly took a big turn for the better with all the fruits of your labour. The red reflectors you seek were offered for the 1980 GS1000 as well on the rear seat cowl but you wont get the chrome looking edge type, it will be black instead.
I guess youve chosen a body colour to suit your desire as i have not gotten back home to check the orange flake codes.

No problem on the paint code, Allan. I liked the color on your bike so I just found something close that I liked. I'll be riding the Suzuki in an upcoming ride that features vintage and interesting bikes, so I was on a time schedule and didn't want to put the paint guy under pressure by waiting even longer. :)

He thinks he will have the tank and side panels done by this weekend, and as late as early next week. Just in time for the Slimey Crud Run (google it.. hehe)

Got the tank and side covers back yesterday. Spent most of Friday and Saturday putting things back together, cleaning up, finding lost bolts/nuts and running to the hardware store. :) She is back together with new paint, but it's raining outside so I don't have a pic yet.

While from a distance it looks good, up close you can see it needs some cosmetic work. It's a start.
