Post by husky99 »

Having trouble getting the little shift shaft seal out on my 1972 Gt 380. Any ideas?

Sadly, I definitely ain't going to be of help to you. I just tried to do the job two days ago on my MachIII and what a dog's breakfast that turned into :x :(

Heres a way to do it with the shift shaft or kick start shaft. Drill two small holes in the face of the seal opposite each other.
Do NOT drill the case or damage the shaft, if not you will have other issues to deal with.
Then using two self tapping screws, after its just cut threads in holes drilled into the seals face, remove it and blunt the pointed end of the screws.
Then screw them back in until they bottom and start pushing the seal out of the case.
Turn the screws alternately to allow the seal to come out square.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Same here... worst. job. ever.

I tried the drilling thing in the shift shaft oil seal. Not nearly enough face to drill into. Ended up tearing out the rubber and grabbing onto the metal with a pair of pliers. Took at least half an hour. Bugger of it is, I'm not even convinced that seal needed replacing!
Well, it's done now.

Did you try the drill thing? Did it work for you?
Slow and steady may win the race, but without loud and fast it's just a waste

I don't know how it looks on your bike, but the normal procedure if possible is to drive it out with something of similar diameter from the other side. If it's not so easy to get to you'll have to get creative and pull it out with whatever you got.

Take a look at what Sears, HomeDepot & Lowes have for removing o-rings & seals.

I recently got these: http://www.sears.com/craftsman-4-pc-hoo ... dNo=3#desc
They also have other tools that might be better for this job.

Had a local bike shop replace this seal on my T350.
When I asked him if he could do it, he said that it was easy. He probably has a tool that made it easy.
