An Ever-Popular Topic....

Post by H2RICK »

is what it costs to insure your bike.
Since my wife is mad to move back to Manitoba, I thought I'd check out what it would cost to insure my various bikes......especially Indy, my GT550A.
The People's Demokratik Republik of Manitoba has, of course, government insurance. There is no such thing as "basic coverage" which, in most jurisdictions, consists of public liability and property damage (PL & PD). This part of the coverage starts at $200,000 in Manitoba but I upped the value to $1,000,000 to match my current coverage......but Manitoba also includes comprehensive and collision coverage as well AND it's no-fault, too. I selected Winnipeg (the capital) as my area of residence since its "accident frequency rating" would be similar to Calgary where I currently reside.
They don't list the 550 but DO list the Buffalo, so I selected it as the nearest equivalent with a declared value of $2001 - $4000.
Bloody Hell !!! $1568.00 per year
I'm currently paying $142.00 per year for PL & PD with $1,000,000 limit but with no collision or comprehensive !!!!
Now I'm sure that if I went to my current insurer and added collision and comprehensive my current rate would take a big jump....but not to THAT height !!!
As well, Manitoba charges $93.00 for plates. Alberta currently charges $55.00 !!!
Apparently the benefits of living in the "Peoples' Paradise" of Manitoba are NOT extended to motorcycle owners/riders.
My 2006 Bandit 1200 costs the same price as my 550 to insure in Alberta BUT....in the Peoples' Paradise, the figure NOW becomes $2332 !!!
Who could afford to own/ride a motorcycle in Manitoba ?? Not too many guys that I know.
To insure all 4 of my bikes in Manitoba for ONE year is over $7000.
Now I know why I see so few bikes on the road in Manitoba. The socialists have succeeded in getting rid of bikes by way of an under-the-table method. Lovely.
What do you think the chances of my wife getting me to move to Manitoba are (at least while I'm still capable of riding my bikes) ??

I've only got the basic PL/PD coverage on my T500 right now as it's just a pile of parts in the garage. I'll probably increase the coverage when it's finished, but it is legally insured for the road with my current policy.

$17 per year. I don't recall exactly what the plate costs offhand but it was $20-$30 for the year.

In the O-zone, as far as I'm concerned, Scorch.

Kidding aside, it's directly north of North Dakota......however, I've found over the years that a quite a few of our US cousins are not really aware that North Dakota is actually a state. Ditto for South Dakota....except Sturgis is slowly changing awareness of South Dakota's existence/place in the Union.

I know! I'm guilty as charged! I consider to have traveled extensively throughout the Continental US, Alaska and Hawaii, but the urge to visit the Dakota's hasn't hit me yet....what in the world is out there?

There are parts of the Dakotas that look somewhat of like the flatter portions of the moon, the big difference is theres an atmosphere to breathe.

Hey, after seeing that, I may reconsider, maybe it is worth taking a trip out there just to see that!

Come to think of it..... maybe not.

Well, it shows creativity, I suppose, and it's definitely better than another scenery-destroying billboard, IMO.

You sound a little testy there Rick but I don't blame ya. We got that sort of thing being pushed on us down here (Or some are at least trying to and I fear they will succeed eventually). My Custom Harley which is valued at an estimated 10k is insured for less than $200 a year I think it is (wifey does the bills). Doug
