I took a good pair of fork ears off a '74 to send out to be rechromed. I was looking at the '75 lower tree covers and the ones from the '74 and noticed that the '74 did not have the little screw that the '75 has and they are, otherwise, identicle. Any idea why that screw is there? The only thing I can think of is that it helps keep it stable in in the tree but with the rubber gaskets you wouldn't think you would need it anyway. I may rechrome the '75s but new ones are $21 apeace so I might just order them.
You can see the difference here. '74 on the left '75 on the right
The '74 style cover was only used on two bikes (GT380 and GT750), but the 1975 version with the screw was used on quite a few - 14 according to Zedder, and it really only covers North American part numbers. My guess is it is for those markets and models that have a reflector mounted on the fork leg rather than on the side of the front signal. Where that wasn't the case, it's just blanked off with the screw.
