Mounting a tire with a trash bag

Post by diamondj »

Saw this on the Cafe Racer board and thought I would pass it along. Anybody ever do this? It seems almost too easy!

that's pretty impressive :)

Hey, I'm building a new bike that will have powdercoated rims - I'll use this for building the wheels and save the scratches!

Thanks for posting -

Next build is this and as you can see, the wheels have to be in the gray color.

That is pretty slick, I wonder if it really would work for a m-cycle tire? I know I've had some that are a real struggle to get on, even when well lubed, etc. I will try it though.

Gordon,

I, for one, would love to be able to follow this build. Please cronicle your build here.
Would anyone mind seeing a bike such as this go together here?

If you stroke it more than twice; you're playing with it.

Too many bikes, too much time, ENOUGH SPACE, FINALLY! Never enough money.........

Now that bag trick is slick !!! Thanks for the link, Jim.
I wouldn't want to try it with a tubeless tire just in case bits of the bag got stuck between the bead and the rim......but for a tube type tire it seems like a great idea. I'll have to give it a try when I finally get around to putting new rubber on Indy. The real trick, of course, is getting the old tires OFF without scarring the rims....

I tried this today, and I'm not sure which of us was more surprised - the tire or me ! Worked like a charm - almost too easy. :D 8) Getting the old ones off of course is a whole other story .......

I'm glad to hear it worked for you, Ian. I managed to mount my new front on our machine at work WITHOUT any scars......although I did use those rim protectors that we brought in. I think those are what saved my rim flanges. It certainly wasn't my tire changing skills.....

Ian,

What trash bag brand did you use? Seriously - I'm wondering if a name brand would work better than no name and I'd love to know what worked for you.......

Thanks!

They were just generic black/dark green trash bags - but thin ones. The front tire slid on like it was greased totally by hand only - the rear tire I admit I helped a little bit, but only very, very slightly with a short lever as my one thumb is still not 100% from being dislocated 3 weeks ago. Nothing close to the level of effort required without the plastic bag even with two good hands I can tell you ! As I said before - I don't know who was more surprised - the tire or me ! 8)

I tried, not very good results on the rear tire. I think with better technique, a little more strength I can see it probably working. I do think it helped over all while I was spooning back on the tire.

I recruited a helping hand for the front, much easier with another hand holding spoons so I didn't give it a shot on the front.
