Line from tank to oil pump on GT550

Mine is harder than Chinese Arithmetic. Is it supposed to be a hard line because it's on the suction side of the pump, or can it be replaced with a new, softer line like Tygon or fuel hose?

Also, there's a fitting in the line about 3 inches from the bottom of the tank. Can't tell if that's a check valve or a jury rig from a previous owner.

I've just got normal clear plastic pipe on both my 550s.

There is no suction on the supply side of the pump. It is gravity fed.

I used tygon on my T350.
