T500 Neutral Switch Detent

Post by Bloop2 »

I have been connecting all the wires on my Cobra to the main harness in the last couple of days, discovered that the neutral light doesn't work. Traced it back to the neutral switch and found the detent screwed onto the shift cam end doesn't line up with the switch. The detent points down to the 8 o'clock position, the switch itself has the brass contact at about 10 o'clock. I verified this by looking at my 1970 T500. The detent there points to 10 o'clock. When assembling the motor, I made sure the shift cam and forks all lined up and changed gears before bolting the cases together. The motor has not been started, I can put the tranny in neutral, shift gears, spin the whole thing with the kick starter. The gear change actuator lines up in the middle of the shift pawls. Is there something that has to be watched for when assembling the shift pawls that cause the shift cam to be out?

Well I finally got it working, had to take the clutch off and readjust the shift cam and pawl carrier. Shifts through all the gears nicely and neutral light now works. Found another brain fart while doing this, had just hooked up the clutch cable but the clutch wouldn't disengage. I had put in a clutch push rod for a later bike not realizing it is shorter than the two piece clutch rod from the original Cobra.

I just went through this. Best test for nuetral light & wires to the dash is to disconnect the wire at the switch & ground to the crankcase.

The switch interior contact is brass, so it does tarnish, brush it up with emory paper & clean the grease out, & bend out the rotating contact a bit and it all should work.

Thanks....I did all that and the wiring all worked by grounding it out, it's just that the actuator arm was too low to contact the brass contact in the switch. Readjusting the shift cam with the pawls solved my problem.
