T250 Charging issue

T250 Charging issue
Any suggestions on where to start looking if my T250 runs well with the lights off, but when turned on the battery seems to start draining and eventually stalls out. The horn will not honk and the turn signals wont flash because i'm assuming the battery is so low. I can also see the headlight get brighter as i rev the engine. I've also noticed it usually stalls when I am going downhill for some reason, not sure if that would be related.

if the battery is good there is a short.check any wiring you may have played with.try disconnecting headlight,turn signals,then ride,if it stays good look for trouble there,if not reconnect then disconnect horn, brakelight.if good do control plug,etc,if you do two items at a time there is less guessing.in my experience there is probably a pinched wire somewhere.

The T250 does not have a voltage regulator.
Instead it uses the battery as a voltage regulator & uses an alternator lighting coil that is switched on/off to adjust alternator output.
The switch that turns the lights on/off also switches the lighting coil on/off.
You probably has a problem in the lighting coil circuit.
You may have a problem at one of the connectors, the light on/off switch. or the wires.
This is a simplified wiring diagram that shows just the alternator & related wiring.
The connector shown at the top is the wiring harness connector for the engine -- it has additional wires for the points & neutral switch.

I think the green lighting coil wire is optionally attached... I think the owners manual talks about connecting it if you need extra power or something like that. Mine on my 74 GT250 was that way I think and I use it for extra power. see if I can find info on it again. see if it is attached or not I suppose is best
Oh, a while back my bike stalled when at a stop sign idling lights on etc.... batt got low, turned off head light rest of the way home
(was daytime) and kept RPMs up. I found a gen wire connector pulled apart

Also check your rectifier has a good earth where it attaches to the frame.

I searched for a while on these forums and kept seeing this solution which I think will work. I will be following an old post by jabcd viewtopic.php?f=29&t=6786&p=121472&hili ... or#p121472 and wiring it up as the third diagram he drew up. I am waiting for a tympanium rectifier/regulator to replace the old factory one to begin. I will let you guys know how it goes. Thanks for the help guys.

Any opinion on whether this modification will help me get the turn signals to flash? At the moment they only stay steady and from what I have read this might be because they are not getting enough power?

The turn signals don't flash when they are not DRAWING enough power. To keep from buying new bulbs right off, wire in a spare bulb on the right or left side to create more amp draw. If the flasher works for that side, the amp draw is the culprit. Buy higher wattage lamps all around. Optionally change the front OR rear to a dual element bulb and wire both elements to be hot when the flasher is flipped on. Had to do that on my 550. The problem is not insufficient power. It's not enough draw. That's why the flashers don't work when a bulb burns out.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.
