I got the Oregon regulator as recommended and it works perfectly. At idle with the headlight off I'm getting 14.3vdc and with the 35w highbeam on about 14.1 vdc. That's plenty to keep the gelcell charged and the lights burning bright. Thanks for the good info and advice.

Then you should have enough alternator output to upgrade to a 45/45w H4 headlight.
