Sorry - just saw this post. Glad you got yours apart without too much pain. I bought a rubber strap wrench once I finally figured out it was threaded together and held the shroud while getting the eye off. Then I think (sorry it's been a while since I took that shock apart) I used a couple of nuts tensioned against each other to hold the damper rod while I got the shroud loose. The retaining pins I was talking about are the little metal ovals for the preload adjusters.
