I blame unions and government taxation for the demise of American Industry. They have wrangled themselves right out of a job. Unions now only exist to perpetuate themselves. As the Union Fatcats sit in their plush offices saying "you can't trust management" (THEY are management, you know...Union management), the workers pay dues, and go on strike while the Fatcats rake in the money.
I was talking to a plant manager of a major textile/polymer plant. He told me that China is producing finished products, for what it costs for raw materials in the good ol' US of A. You can't compete with that.

Lane...IMHO it is a lot more complicated than that.
the US car companies have an appalling record of market manipulation and resistance to new technology. As well they have worked against the interests of the people by shutting down efficient public transport systems and lobbying Government to build more and more roads rather than public transport etc etc.
They have brought it on themselves. To blame it on the dis-empowered workers is too easy.
If you want to live on a dollar a day go to China and breath in the toxic fumes and drink the poisoned water etc. they can build cheap because there are no restrictions. Also they build what the market wants...not what the car companies want to market.
