GT500 to rich
My GT500 is very difficult if not mostly impossible to start when warm. I am mostly sure it is running rich. I have taken apart and cleaned the carbs multiple times everything looks good. I set the idle air adjustment screw to 1.5 turns out. I figured checking the float height would be a good idea, but I do not know where the reference point for measuring them is. Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: GT500 to rich
If the plugs do not show signs of running rich or fouling, the mixture is OK. It sounds more like an ignition problem when it gets hot something is breaking down, check ALL connections under the seat, under the tank to coil. If it still is hard to start you should get a ohm meter and check resistances when it is hot, wait until the next day when cold and check readings again. I have had to replace both coils on the stator, ignition coil and build a new CDI box. So, I think I can say I know a thing or two about this exact system!
Keep us posted.

Re: GT500 to rich
yeah the plugs are looking rich. I will check the electrical system could likely be a weak spark not burning all the fuel. It runs so good though when past 1/4 throttle.

It should be OK, but check the timing on the stator, it may be too far off. A three bolt pattern steering wheel puller is perfect for removing the rotor when needed when working on the stator.

Re: GT500 to rich
yep so the cdi is shot and the ignition coils are too. The other coils are slighty out of spec but should be ok. You were right on the money.

Re: GT500 to rich
What were the readings for the coils? The CDI may not be bad, yet. I have a 'sticky' post here about a homebuilt CDI box. WAY cheaper than OEM, check it out. The stator coils will run about $45.00 each (there are 3) and an aftermarket ignition coil (Dyna S) about $65.00. Need to be carefull about what you want replace (don't fix what ain't broke). Just trying to keep cost managable.

and charging coils are right around 1.8ohms should be 1 ohm +/- .1
my meter has .9 ohms internal/leads.
the exciter coils are a little low but as temp goes up resistance does too.
So i figure CDI and Ignition coils

Re: GT500 to rich
so just ordered all the parts for the CDI and new DYNA DC6-1 but the SCR is back ordered for awhile. Bummer Guess i will try and find it somewhere else.

That is a good thing you did not order the CDI. Very expensive!! (over $200) Do the coils first, the connections are not easy to solder though, once that is done and remounted, coat ALL the connections with epoxy. If you don't they WILL vibrate off. If you have to replace the CDI after all, build one, it runs about $35.00 for the parts and a box to put it in. I have been running on this one almost two years now. Draw out the connections for all the coils before you take it apart, so you will see easier how to wire the new coils in. Pay attention how the wires are routed so they miss both the inside parts of the rotor.
