Took the GT on a 270 ride today that was mechanically uneventful. It's a semi-annual event called the Slimey Crud Run. It's mostly vintage and exotic bikes -- Harleys seem out of place. I had a gentleman approach me right after I dismounted the bike when parking it in the lot with the hundreds of other bikes. He asked some questions, complimented my bike and said that it was nice to see a Water Buffalo at the event.

I had just gotten the tank and side panels back from the paint shop on Friday.
She still needs alot of work, but is getting there.
(The "water cooled" badges on the side of the heads turned out pinkish. I touched them up really quick but want to replace them with the blue ones.) Plus I think I'd like to have the white/black striping put on the tank.
Oh.... and hat I found out later is that the gentleman that approached me was Peter Egan (Cycle World writer). I felt pretty honored.

I agree, it's a bit too plain without them.
With the cold weather upon us I think it was its last ride for the season, so it may not see many (if any changes) until Spring.

Beautiful bike! Too bad you live so far up north. Down here it is almost year 'round riding. Today, cloudy with a ten percent chance of rain, I am riding to work! Tomorrow, maybe the car... The weather down here is both a curse and a blessing, I get to ride more, but less time to work on the bike. That is why it still looks a little ratty (PO was not kind to it), but it runs pretty good. So I am riding!

Funny thing about PO... mine had two. The last guy owned it for several years but didn't do much other than general maintenance; brake pads, front tire, battery, etc. He wasn't really "into it" and merely owned it for the sake of having two wheels (he now owns a Harley, and rides alot more.) He said he had fixed some of the goofy things that the previous owner did, but I don't know what.
Cosmetically it was left as it was from the original owner, who didn't seem to want to put the money into the upkeep. It had several dents in the tank, a seat off a different bike, cord holding the tank down (no rubber strap), electrical tape holding a broken blinker lens together, and various other mickey-mouse fixes to keep things from falling off.
Now he says he wants it back, hahah.
He wants me to ride it over to the original owners house and get more history about it. Not sure I want to know, snicker.

Yes isnt that the way, POs are usually too cheap or lazy to put some time and money into something they've owned for years. Yet when they sell it they usually want it back AFTER seeing what youve done to it. My rule is NEVER let them see it again if its avoidable, its much easier that way,,LOLOL.
The bike looks great, some tank decals and the few bits needed and you have a wonderful example of a 76 Buffalo there.

Peter Egan! That's the name I was trying to remember from the Slimey Crud run. Since I dropped my subscription to Cycle World several years ago, I had forgotten his name.

Ok, put some pinstripe on today. It is just black and another thinner stripe of metallic silver. It definitely looks better with stripes on the tank.
In the last month I put on a new chain and sprockets, replaced most of the fasteners on the engine with stainless allen-head bolts, put on new cylinder head badges (water cooled), and installed new exhaust gaskets. Also removed one of the center exhaust pipes and steamed it, as it was pretty plugged up. It was the only pipe that still had a baffle when I got it. (I installed baffles in the other 3 last year.)
The original bolts on the engine were pretty boogered up - original owner seemed to use whatever tool he had handy to loosen them. Some of the fasteners weren't even original.. (flat instead of phillips, etc.)
Two more weeks (May 2) and I will be taking it to its second run in the Slimey Crud Run in Southern Wisconsin, which is infamous for old and unique bikes.

Well, the spring Slimey Crud Run is over. Wow what a beautiful day... Almost too beautiful as it brought out alot of the Harley owners (and their accompanying noise... potato potato.. as well as a fashion show.)
I found this article online tonight; someone snapped a pic of my GT and put it on their blog. My boyfriend and I (in the orange) are standing behind it with his KLR. Stuff like this makes all that hard work worth it. (Not exactly a restoration, but a 49k bike that I'm still fixing what the DPO did..)

Besides my GT I did see a mint RE-5. Not sure what year but it had the canister dash and tail light.
The little stuffed guy stays with the GT. I think he's kinda funny when you are riding down the road, arms-a-flayling in the wind. He might end up on my KLR.
