I wondered if it might seal after running. Maybe I should have given it more time.

Hi Dave..... I have a good water pump that only needs an impeller put back on... It's the one that the impeller pushes on, and there is a roll pin that the impeller slide over and has a small clip to hold it in place.. When I had my motor apart, I had a new pump so I put it in.. Its in good shape.. It's yours if you want it.. I can mail it to you if I can find a box or just run it over to you.

Thank you Allen , but i hate to just take the pump for free as they are worth a lot . I got a email back from GTReiner and he quoted me a price of $40 for the spring seal and the nylon seal w shipping .. but if you do insist i would happly pay any shipping costs to get it here

Old thread but the issue stays fresh.

The pump i rebuilt with a teflon seal did not seal at the outset, so I replaced it with a different one and that worked just fine. Of course I just fitted that rebuilt pump to the Phat Trakka and sure as God made little green apples, it still leaks. Seems that leaving it on the shelf doesn't help much.

I think maybe I'll try and run a couple of heat cycles and see if that's enough to get the teflon to seal. I don't want to ride a bike that leaks glycol onto the rear tire. That would be sub optimal.

Did anyone find a suitable replacement for the mechanical seal?

I found a regular water pump seal that will work with a small amount of machining to the housing. Many bikes use mechanical seals and as luck would have it the non replaceable seal in an FZR400 appears to the the same dimensions but it's not available either. I have ordered a couple of mechanical seals to see how close they are.

There's a company in the UK that will sell us one for 50 pounds but they should be $15- $20 so that won't fly. It does tell me that they are available if we know where to look.

I'm sure that someone makes them. The problem is knowing which one to order. I'll finish stripping that FZR400 pump today and see if I can get the seal out without destroying it.

Most other apps use a ceramic face instead of that polished stainless seat, but if the seal face is graphite, it should work. I'll drop one of my m\pumps at the machine shop tomorrow and order a regular type seal while I wait for the other mechanical seals to arrive.

I can get the seal head, without the seat, but my supplier wants a 10 piece minimun order! If enough guys want the seal, I'll order them in! $20.00 plus postage. Just remember, you have to machine and reuse your stainless steel seat. The oil seal and little ball bearing are available too. The "O" rings I'll have to measure again but I'm sure I can get them. One thing that is often overlooked is the shaft. If there is any corrosion or water damage, it'll have to be rechromed as well. I can get the shafts repaired for $50.00!
If there is enough interest in rebuilding the water pumps, then I start ordering in the parts!

Seems to me that the mechanical seal is not quite as rare as we were led by Suzuki to believe. A new one arrived today and it appears to be identical to the original apart from the heat activated adhesive band and ceramic seat which isn't needed.

The next trick is to press it into the housing without distorting it.

I'll keep you posted.

BTW - my bike stopped leaking but I suspect that's because it's empty

I made a press spacer out of thick wall tube and the new mechanical seal just pressed right in.

Today I'll see if I can get new 6200 bearings and 10-22-6 seals from our local bearing shop and I'll rebuild a spare pump.
