Almost any modern small bike front end would work in there depending on "the look" you are after. An EX500 or GS from any year.

With the low rider look you will want shorter forks anyway.

So many options, so much fun to be had

just a thought

the motor is getting ported and polished next week....anybody have this done to theirs and what kind of increase in power should I expect?

Well that all depends on who did the porting and how they worked out the port sizes and how well they get port angles and sizes matched up and what they do to the heads.

It also depends on the intakes and exhaust system.

Well set up you could be looking at 50-60 at the rear wheel. I have heard of 80ho motors in full race trim set up by people who have been working with those motors for years and really know what they are doing. Done badly you could looking at a lot less.

Eric (zookie) on this board is one who knows these motors.

pictures of project

Post by zrs1919 »

so i've taken a couple picture of the brackets I made. I took like triple hardened steel, it's made for safes and vaults, it took me two and a half hours to drill thru a half inch of metal. So I punched out one inch, and then hammered in some sleeves that would allow the swingarm bolt to slide thru. I tacked the brakets onto where the exhaust and rear footpegs bolt up. So far everything lines up perfect...

Step away from the motorcycle before someone gets hurt.

Seriously.

I'm probably over reacting, but that doesn't look safe or soundly engineered to me. The swingarm pivot point should be further forwards for a number of reasons including safety and chain geometry.

I'm not saying that it will fail, but I'd feel happier with the swingarm mounted in the stock position. If you plan to run it with struts on a drag race track, you might get away with it as long as it is welded by a professional, but with suspension or on the street I would recommend against it.

Please buy copies of the Tony Foale and John Robinson books for more info on the subject of chassis. An even better book is the Bradley (?) book on motorcycle engineering which is/was available from Michael Moore at Eurosport.

definitley will be welded by a professional (me!) its just tacked on for now. I've run a string line to make sure the geometrics of it were in running order and they are. The pivot bolt actually is in the same EXACT spot just 6 inches back. Trust me it's all there and will be in safe running order.

BTW...that bike ^^^^ up there is sick.

But dont worry everything lines up and will be completley safe...I work at a motorcycle custom shop and we do builds on street bikes and drag bikes. One of our partners is roaringtoyz which are stationed just 20 miles north of me. Check out some crazy bikes on their website

I appreciate your input though....and yes it will be strutted!
thanks!

Depending on the downward angle of the swingarm, you may have to raise the back of the motor upward so as not to get chain bind under compression. Other wise you may have to keep the chain too slack and risk it coming off of the rear sprocket. That is quite a stretch from the countershaft to the swingarm pivot now and was really long to begin with.

Eric,

"triple hardened steel" What is that twaddle about?

I think I'll slip quietly out of this discussion. The questions and comments don't stack up. Either the guy knows what he's doing and already has experience with significant modifications in which case the questions don't sound appropriate, or he's relatively knew to this sort of modification.

Either is fine with me, but there's an apparent disconnect between the stated level of expertise and experience, and the newbie type questions and comments, and that sets my alarm bells off.

I am a fabricator...but don't know much about these bikes.....as why I ask the questions....triple hardened steel was a joke...I'm just saying it's some crazy strong stuff...

here are some pictures

everything is fine....I switched the swingarm to an f3 cbr 600 which is significantly smaller...

everything is working just fine....

I don't understand where all the doubt comes from....it's really a simple procedure

I'm already an AMA member...so I think this will be raced in the Super Eliminator class
