They are hard to come by. I did find a NOS still in box, but have not used it yet... keeping as a spare. My 73 clutch/starter gear did fail. It is really the starter gear bushing that gets wasted more so. I was able to find a good used early version and that is still in my bike working OK. I mean I still have early clutch and e starter works fine and not too noisy for what it is.

This may (double check!) be one

EDIT Not it I now think sorry Double Edit: Not sure :oops: . I have one somewhere and will check... If your's is a apart you can check against this pic below

also search gt550 misc parts too some guys add it in with nuts and bolts or they call it a starter gear

Some of the bike salvagers that sell via eBay likely don’t know that we want to buy complete clutch + starter clutch assemblies. So they try to sell the bits separately.
As a result you might score all of the parts if you look for sellers listing the clutch, and then (1) see if they list the other parts, & (2) email them to see if they have the other parts.

Failing that, the parts you need probably will be listed on eBay at some point. Be patient because you might have to wait a few months & you may have some good luck.

I agree with with jabcb says. But as far as waiting on eBay that was true the past 15 years, but things are getting very scares for these bikes, the wait is much longer, sells fast and expensive .

I'll keep pushing find that you should a good used old style starter clutch gear, in case your goal is to get up and running while you look for the prize part you asked for.

I tried once to find a replacement bushing (and with a slot for oil to pass like OEM) but so far no luck. If you could find that, we all would be in good shape if someone didn't wait too long before replacing

The old part number is 12620-34003 (12620-34004 as well?) see this link -> http://www.kettleclinic.co.uk/kcforum/v ... 6&start=50" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here is one NOS and what it looks like

I'll continue my search for the later version, but will also look into good condition components of the early version. Thanks for all the input, appreciate it.

So question? Mine is a 73 550 GT,,,,,,,Once the electric start went to occasionally disengaging during cranking, I just stopped using the electric start. It kick starts so easily and requires no more that a couple kicks for it to fire. Is there any danger in just leaving it be and kick start, or are the parts that are worn or damaged a potential problem? Don't want to blow it up.

You just need to inspect the starter clutch for any cracks or loose parts. As long as it is not disintegrating(which the early gears do) no problem. I have been just kicking mine for 10 years or so .

Email GTreiner1@AOL.com and he'll send you a list of his current spares. He usually has some. Note that there are 2 types of Borg Warner clutches, so you need to know outer, inner and especially width measurements. Marcel in Holland is good too. https://classicsuzukiparts.nl/?lang=en" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Per Service Bulletin GT-26, Suzuki sold some of the upgrade parts as a matched set. I wondered why they did that — this likely explains why.

There’s a very nice one on ebay now. Not cheap ($445) but lots of new components including the pattern matched set and bearings.

I remember reading somewhere that a GT200X5 starter clutch can be adapted to fit the 550. I'll see if I can find it.
