T500J New to the board
Hello,
I just recently bought a 1971 T500. The bike is complete and relatively unmolested.
I have started a strip down, looking for any issues.
So far, so good. I will have the motor out before too long and will be keeping my fingers crossed.
The bike has 13,000 miles on it so time will tell. I am planning on doing the transmission oil modification.
I am not in any rush and looking forward to working on it. I am sure I will be looking for advice from the site!
Cheers.

Welcome.
Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

Some weird paint shenanigans on the tank. Taking off the added paint with acetone.
The stock tank badge indentations have been filled with - filler.

That there is a 1972 I can tell by the side badges and the paint on the tank. The ID plate is the year of manufacture date not the model year

Not sure what your plan is.. Your bike does look nice and these Paul Miller tanks are top quality.

Re: T500J New to the board
Interesting , I have also just put a deposit on a Titon 1972. It's also pre mod as regards the oil resovoir 1200cc v 1400cc I suspect. I'm only going to do local stuff on it so the mod may or may not be needed. One day I suspect I would like to do it but will need to talk with other owners who have carried out the mod first. Parts are available from the USA, and I guess at the same time the crank seals may also need doing ( sensible) ?.
In the interim a previous post suggested using ep90 in the box ????? - can anyone expand on what is best to place in the box of a Titon 500, and also what quantity of oil. If it's pre mod it states 1200 cc but would 1400cc do any harm or just help a little.
Any advice appreciated on this.
Regards
Paul

Re: T500J New to the board
Here is a picture of the tank, after i cleaned up the added paint. The paint came off very easily with acetone. I was expecting to find bondo underneath but all in all the tank is in good shape. I am not sure why the spots for the tank badges were filled in. At the moment I am thinking I will respray the white with some rattle can as close a match as I can find. I don't think I can reclaim the original tank badge set up because of the bondo in there. Or should I try to salvage them?
Engine number 57553, I believe confirms it as a 72.
Also the transmission mod I am getting from ebay listed as...

Priming my fuel tank with badge holes masked off..
I suppose enough prolonged dabbing/soaking of the area with the acetone you have already been using would eventually soften up the body filler so you could slowly pick it out of the tiny mounting holes with wooden or plastic toothpicks. I wouldn't take much to mess up those threads.....so easy does it. The other area could just be scraped/picked out with not as much care needed.
A few applications of Aircraft Remover would probably make the whole job a lot quicker. I use the brush on type not aerosol.
That fuel tank is looking pretty good so far. From the way it looked before, I too thought you were going to run into a bunch of body filler.
