What gas mileage to expect on a stock 76 GT750A?

Post by Evans Ward »

Haven't had a chance to do any long rides yet on my GT750 yet and wondering what gas mileage to expect? Bike is stock GT750A. Highway mileage with good throttle control.

What mileage do other GT750 owners get here? Thanks.

Evans,
I used to get mid thirties on the highway with my '76.
The person to ask is Allen, he rode his GT750 over 100k miles all over the US.

Allen cheats and uses big CS sprockets, etc to improve mileage. I don't think my 74 ever got more than mid-thirties. Blueboy....not that good.

It all depends what you call 'good' throttle control.
And how you ride, load, etc. etc.
Just ride and enjoy. If you want good fuel consumption a Honda Cub takes some beating.
Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

On my most recent trip, all stock, I got 41mpg US going 60mph between fillups. Mileage dropped to 36mpg when I sped up to 70mph between fillups.
No really... it's supposed to smoke.

On my 76 I have 15/43 sprockets and its possible to get a bit over 100 miles on main tank. Almost all of my riding is long distance touring at around 70 mph.
If you are "gentle" and keep speeds under 65mph its possible to get 120 to 130 miles on main tank.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Thanks for the replies guys! I can definitely live with the mileage numbers shared.

Since I've bought the GT750, I haven't ridden my paint shaker H2 750!

You have some nice bikes. How "bad" is the H2 for gas mileage? I think I heard <20 mpg.

How do you like the YR1. Did that year have the finger ports in cyls? I though the first year did not but I still think it was rated 36 HP. Maybe a little heavy. I like the style of the fins on the heads.

I forget what I get for mpg now on my 1975 750M. It was low 30s, then I removed the pilot air jet mod (back to stock). Fresh needle and needle jets. For 1975 it says clip on third notch, but it was on 4th when I first opened it (think i was the first to look so how it lefty factory?).

I did run it a 3rd clip for a while and saw no performance difference. Lats time I tore it done I think I went to 4th clip to be "safe" I may go back to 3rd. That should help mpg. But easy riding I think I am mainly fueling ~ 50% from pilot circuit@ 1/8 throttle. I think I was in the high 30s with stock pilot and new needle/jet but don't recall if 3rd or 4th clip

Thanks! I have the bikes I've always wanted. Sold my last 4 stroke bike last year and now have only 2 stroke bikes.

I get 28-30 MPG on the H2. Bike has 3rd over Wisecos and Ivan's carb Jet kit, running stock VM30 Mikunis. I do have TNT expansion chambers on it. Has front and rear handling mods as well as some braking mods. Probably will always be my favorite vintage bike and 1st love motorcycle.

How do you like the YR1.

Haven't ridden it yet as I am still in project phase. It is a 4400 original mile survivor bike. I have a new rebuilt crank and bored cylinders ready to go. Hope to have it up by spring. It will also get an electronic Powerdynamo ignition. Will be a stock rider bike.

Did that year have the finger ports in cylinders?

Not on stock original 67 YR1 (3 port) but I bought 69 cylinders that have the 5 port cylinders with boost ports. Stealth mod and should give it some mid range punch.

I though the first year did not but I still think it was rated 36 HP. Maybe a little heavy. I like the style of the fins on the heads.

I like the vintage styling of this bike too. Has a lot of neat features including an air pump mounted under the frame, dip sticks on both fuel and oil injection tanks, and speedo/tach built into headlight nacelle.
