Black oily petrol dripping from exhausts !!

Post by Clarkie_10 »

Hi Guys ,

I recently tried to fire my old girl up ( 1975 GT550m) after being parked up for maybe 3 months .
battery good & charged but soon run down ! Tried kicking but not a pop or bang !!
Checked plugs wet !
Charged battery over night and tried again cranked over and came to life . However I soon spy a puddle if Black runny oily mess dripping from a little rust hole in bottom of silencer so immediately shut her off to investigate .
Dip my finger in liquid and of course it smells like petrol .
Has anyone experienced the same ( on my last ride out she ran fine 60-70mph no issues ) .
Should I try and drain crankcase ??
Any advice welcome . :(

That happened to my GT250 due to a leaking petcock.

There are little drain holes in the exhaust which is where the liquid will be coming from. As mentioned above it could be petrol if your petcock is sticking. It also could just be water from condensation forming in the pipes. If you aren't riding the bike regularly and just starting it in the garage this will happen. Its surprising how much builds up. This would normally be blown out during riding. If it is petrol the best way to remove it is to take out the sris valves at the front and leave it overnight to drain . you will soon know if the petcock is sticking because a mug full of petrol will flood out. Good luck

It's a build up of unspent petrol from your attempts to start the bike unsuccessfully the previous day. Mixed with the oily carbon deposits in the exhaust, it drips out as black petrol. It will dry up quick enough once you get it running well.

Be careful of the direction you have the exhausts pointed when you get it started the first time as it will shoot that black oily goop a good ways . It will paint walls if it happens to be pointing that way ( dont ask how i know this )
the older i get the faster i was
