rubber mounting recommendations for aftermarket exhausts?

Post by jabcb »

Unexpectedly learned something new when reading a topic on a T500 cafe project.
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=11589&start=15

Didn’t know you needed to do anything special to mount Jemco or Higgspeed exhausts.
Did a Google search & didn’t find much info — mostly complains about Kawasakis.

Question #1:
The GT380, GT550 & GT750 have frame exhaust mounts with rubber vibration isolators.
Provided you make sure that’s its installed correctly, is this sufficient for the aftermarket exhausts?

Specifically, I have Jemco 3-into-1s on my GT750.
Will make sure its installed correctly & I have a small gap between the frame & exhaust bracket.
Is this enough?
If not, that what is recommended?

Question #2:
The T500/GT500 & GT250/T250/T350 have rigid frame mounts for the exhaust.
TheT500/GT500 has a 2-piece stock exhaust that has a smidgen of flexibility at the joint.
The GT250/T250/T350 has a 1-piece exhaust.

What is recommended for these bikes?

Specifically, we have a GT250 cafe project & are planning to get Higgspeed exhaust.
What is recommended?

I have had my 3 into 3 Jemcos attached to the stock mounts for about 14 years with no problems....

I've had Higgspeed chambers on my GT380 for a couple of years now with no problems. They are designed to bolt straight onto the original mounts. I suppose if you were really worried about vibrations you could put a rubber washer either side of the mounting bracket just to be on the safe side.Image

That’s a nice GT380.

So for question #1, triples with frame exhaust mounts with rubber vibration isolators, the answer is that they are ok.

Any input on question #2, this issue for the twins that have rigid frame mounts?

Correct. Gt750 has rubber mounted exhausts to match its rubber mounted engine.

On rigidly mounted motors, it is best to rubber mount the exhausts. If you modify the frame it is easy to add a tube to take a GT750 rubber mount. Another option is to use something like a TZ350 mount. They are a touch pricey, so i tend to use pipe mounts from a two stroke dirt bike. CR125 or CR250 have rubber mounted exhausts and it should be relatively easy to make one of those mounts work.
