Stuck GT550 Alternator Rotor
Hey guys, I'm in the process of rebuilding a motor for my recently acquired GT550. Before splitting the case I attempted to get the rotor off with no luck so I continued breaking the engine down hoping I would figure out a way to get the rotor off later. I read a few posts on the forums and now I'm in the process of rebuilding and putting everything back together and the crankshaft is the last thing I have to do before I can move on and I still can't get this thing off! I'm mainly trying the M8 stud and M10 bolt method I read in some other posts with no luck. Banged on the bolt a bunch with a mallet; still no luck. Tried the impact wrench on the M10; and still nothing. Worse yet, the force of the M10 against the M8 stud has made the groove for my flathead un-usable so it is stuck in there until I can get the rotor off. Ha! So, I'm here for some ideas or or advice from someone with more experience than me so I can get this damn thing off of there. Please help. Thanks!

Get it a tight as you possibly can (would have been easier on the bike), then hit the head of the 10mm bolt with a HARD hammer. Soft mallets won't do the job. If it doesn't pop off, try to tighten some more and whack it again. Never did a 500 but that's how it came off on my 750B
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

Re: Stuck GT550 Alternator Rotor
Sometimes I've found that leaving the puller tightened up overnight can do the trick. I had a GS500 rotor which just wouldn't budge, I tried everything, but then I left it overnight under tension, I came out next morning and gave it a sharp crack with a hammer and it pinged off instantly. Also heat night help, but you can't overdo heat because of the delicate coils/wiring behind there.
(And yes, use a steel hammer, not soft mallet, it's the sharp 'crack' that you need).

Re: Stuck GT550 Alternator Rotor
Thanks guys. I switched to a hammer, squirted some penetrating oil in it, cranked down on the bolt, and left it overnight. In the morning I gave it about 20 hard hits with the hammer, then tried the impact wrench again and it finally popped off. I can continue getting this engine back together now. Thanks again.
