Plug Cap Confusion

Post by Coyote »

On my last GT550 (RedZone) I swapped out the plug caps for the non resistor type. They worked really well and produced a markedly better spark. The part number was LZFH 8710. I decided early on that I would use those caps on my current build. I went to the parts store (O'Riley) and got waited on by a stone cold, book only rookie. 15 minutes of thumbing through books and he can't find the part number anywhere. A more experienced part man came over to assist. He told the kid this is what he wants right here. He turned the book around and showed me a pic. I said yes, that's it.
I get a call that the caps are in. I go and pick them up. OH NO! These boxes are labeled LZFH 8381. So I go on the internet and get increasingly confused. These caps look just like the ones I had and were too short to have a resistor in them. So I put them on. They work and give me a nice blue spark at the plug. BUT, I'm still not sure what I have. It's been eating at me for months. Now I find that there are other LZFH caps that DO have resistors. 1, 5 and 10 ohm. SO from that I assume that LZFH is the shape (maybe).
Can anyone tell me the difference between the LZFH 8710 and the LZFH 8381? What do I have?
Also what the hell is the difference between a spark plug cap, a spark plug cover and a resistor cover? They all look the same to me. :? :?
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

LZFH is NGK's part #
8381 is NGK's stock # for the same part.
http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/docs/Resistor_Covers.pdf

NGK's part numbering can be a bit out there.
The B8ES plugs we use are also referred to as NGK 2411 & NGK 823.

NGK USA doesn't use stock # 8710, but there are a few Google hits on it.
So maybe they discontinued using stock # 8710 or it was used in other countries.

Yes. The only reference to the 8710 are UK links. Odd. it's only been a little over 3 years since I bought them. I should go back to the same nerd and tell him I need some NGK 2411's. That could be very entertaining.
So spark plug cap and spark plug cover are one in the same?

those 4 digit codes were/are NGK stocking numbers.

Ian has a page from the NGK site http://www.oldjapanesebikes.com/mraxl_G ... /index.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and it says that

L = 90 degrees
B = 14mm thread
or Z - 10,12 or 14mm thread
F = Terminal stud (not to fit over a nut - that would be code E
H = compact type

The ones I ordered off ebay were LZFH 8381 and that wasn't too long ago.

I also bought a pack of Moroso crimp on plug caps with zero resistance from Summit racing. They are rubber with a crimp on terminal and seem fine - they are similar to the caps used by Dyna on their coils.
