Your left cyl. might be the strong cyl.! Do a cyl. balance test. The stronger cyl. won't smoke as much as the others! Short out one set of points at a time and check your RPM drop. Last year when my son was following me down to Deals Gap he knew when I had to switch to reserve when the left side smoked!

Re: ALSO i noticed
Hi,I don't know what difference the reserve position would make, the SRIS system seems to do some strange things...for years my top left pipe would smoke more than the others,in the last two months it's now swaped to top right..I'm not concerned at all about this,as the bike runs clean once hot
Cheers,
Roger

Re: ALSO i noticed
When I ran out of gas, the left pipe would smoke until I turned on to reserve and it fired up again. My left cyl was the "strong" one. I did a cyl balance when we got to Deals Gap and the center and right cyl only dropped the RPM'S about 200 RPM at idle but it would still run on two cyl's. When I shorted out the left set of points the bike stalled! Did a quick carb balance in the parking lot and on the way home the only time my son knew I was out of gas was when he saw me reach down to the petcock!!

That's a very common characteristic of all 2 strokes. Can be caused by dozens of reasons. Most of them are nothing to be fearful of. Some are. Learn to read and compare your plugs. It's the easiest and most accurate way of determining bad crank seals. Other than a leak down test. Comparing plug readings and matching that reading to a particular cylinder tells an accurate story. If your carbs are in good order and clean. If your air or fuel settings are exactly the same on all 3 carbs. Each carb has the same jets, all of them are clean. If the plug for the cylinder that is smoking less, reads much leaner than the others. Or you can not balance the plug readings via the same air or fuel adjustments on each carb. That cylinders crank seal is bad.
