gt380 spaghetti....headlight wiring quiz
Hi esteemed members.
right, fingers on buzzers for your starter for 10 points. Who can tell me what the purple and orange wires are to the left side of the picture? And for bonus points, the strange white and white/red cable to the top right?
yes, it's that old 'i took everything apart and didn't follow ian's advice of photographing things beforehand' situation which i'm sure members are familiar with.
i feel a bot of a clut. But that's what the whole rebuild thing is about, no?

Re: gt380 spaghetti....headlight wiring quiz
If it's the 380, then orange is switched power - comes from the ignition switch. There doesn't appear to be a purple (or mauve) but a light blue comes from the flasher relay (to the handlebar flasher switch common). Possibly the orange goes to the flasher relay (which is situated elsewhere) or possibly just a spare - there should be a single male connector with red tags on in there.
The other two wires look a bit home brewed si I would suggest you gently pull the black outer and see where it goes - perhaps it goes to the front brake stop light switch (guess??) so would need to go from orange to white. What colours are the white and white/red connected to?

Think of how stupid the average person is, then realise that half of them are more stupid than that.

Re: gt380 spaghetti....headlight wiring quiz
the orange is a second orange as one goes to power the ignition switch so i'm confused about that. The mauve also seems redundant. On the right side, i just dont know. I didn't check back to the clocks (if indeed they go there)
on my gt380 though i didnt think there was a front break switch
thanks

Re: gt380 spaghetti....headlight wiring quiz
Here is the GT380B wiring diagram:
download/file.php?id=825
And wire codes:
download/file.php?id=828
The GT380 has two main power wires:
1) two red wires from the battery to the ignition switch
2) two orange wires from the ignition switch to power everything
This was done to reduce voltage drops.
Since you have a "customized" wiring layout, you should use a process of elimination to figure out what you have.
This diagram is for a later model that has the gear readout.
You didn't say what model year your GT380 is.
If you have an earlier model, it might be easier to start from a different wiring diagram.
Also, if your have an 1974 GT380L, you might have the wiring color code changes listed in Service Bulletin GT-23:

Re: gt380 spaghetti....headlight wiring quiz
to answer Alan's question about the two wires on the top right side, which he said i should trace back....i have found they go to the bottom of the rev counter.
is that a tiny little light, perhaps?
thanks

Re: gt380 spaghetti....headlight wiring quiz
Hi!
There is only one lamp in the rev counter, to light up the scale.
Maybe someone tinkered his own solution. Foto?
In your picture I miss the second blue triple connector (uses two terminals only) to the scale light-bulbs, with GR and B/W wire. Perhaps it has to do with this.

Re: gt380 spaghetti....headlight wiring quiz
All i have figured out is that the two 'customized' wires are going to the rev counter. WHERE though should i connect them?
I dont want to just experiment
thanks in advance

Re: gt380 spaghetti....headlight wiring quiz
Take a look at the wiring diagram: download/file.php?id=825
The tach & speedo lamps connect to the same wiring.
Green (Gr) is hot for the lights. It traces back to the lighting on/off switch.
Black/white (B/W) is the ground.

Oops. Your are correct. I didn't look at the color code key.markush wrote:Gr = gray

Re: gt380 spaghetti....headlight wiring quiz
so both of them just need connecting to power and that's it? (they are earthed further down the line, so to speak somewhere else, i mean)
thanks

Re: gt380 spaghetti....headlight wiring quiz
No.
One wire connects to B/W, which is a ground wire.
The other connects to Gr, which is the hot from the light on/off switch.
The bit of confusion is that Gr stands for Gray & I indicated it stands for Green.
You can just look at the speedo light wiring & do the same for the tach light wiring.

Re: gt380 spaghetti....headlight wiring quiz
in fact, i got it wrong. All that is not working is the rev counter. the light to the rev counter is working. So, how does that effect the prognosis?
