Different SRIS question
Hello all,
Still working on the 74 GT750 I recently picked up, but have a different SRIS question. Has anyone here worked out a process to remove the SRIS valves on a Buffalo with the engine still in the frame and the exhausts still on the bike? I really don't want to have to pull the exhausts off as I've had issues pulling off exhausts on older bikes and don't want that drama...broken exhaust bolts drama that is!
I can just reach them but a bit afraid to pull too hard on the lines and damage them. Also, I'm afraid that if I was to get the lines off and valves out, I might not be able to put the lines back on with those tiny spring clips! I know I can take the valves out completely and block them off but I want to keep it as original as possible.
When I got this bike, my first 2 stroke after working on lots of late '70's and early '80's GS Suzukis. the oil tank was empty and I didn't know why. But through my research here on this forum and help from a few members, I now know that the oil lines can pass oil into the crank. I removed my spider and yes, 3 of the lines were empty and 3 were full of oil. So I'm pretty sure my cylinders have extra oil in them.
Has anyone maybe worked out a process by maybe altering some tools to reach the lines easier? By this, I mean I thought about altering a tack puller, you know with the split end, to reach the lines and pull them off. Has anyone tried maybe using some lubricant on the valve ends so you can screw the valves back in with the lines already on them. That way the lines can spin on the valve while you screw them in and then add the spring clip?
Any kind of tricks or adaptations would be greatly appreciated. And please, give details. Thanks and Merry Christmas to all on this board.

Re: Different SRIS question
You can just push the clips off the valve end and along the SRIS pipe an inch using a thin screwdriver, bit of poking and a torch helpful! then, same 'driver, prise the SRIS pipes carefully off the valve barbs. Finally, a 12mm AF open spanner will have then out. Not sure if there's room for a socket on the 750, you certainly can on the 550.
In the case of your bike you have at least 3 oil line check valves leaking, but the leak may be acceptably slow, no way to know if its taken years or only days to drain the tank.
You will probably have full crankcases so please don't be tempted to turn the motor over except slowly and by hand, in case of hydrolock.
Good luck,
Mike
ps: unless you will never have the exhausts off, you might as well give it a go! on GTs at least, I've not had the snapping on removal disease (unlike GSX bikes), the bolts being stronger than the block. Damage here seems mostly due to folk over-tightening and stripping the alloy thread in the block. The bolts should not be in very tight anyway, thats not how they seal (thats the job of the crushable gasket).

Re: Different SRIS question
Hey Mike,
Thanks for the info. The previous owner said it sat for 10 years. Not sure how much to trust him if you saw some of the things he had done to it! But I did help him pull it out of his garage covered in dust. And I never thought about how long it would've taken to drain the oil tank but I do know 3 lines are letting some oil through.
But I'm still very unsure as to messing with the exhausts. I've done quite a bit on this bike so far and just don't want to add another issue.
Guess I'll give it another look before I decide how to handle it.
Still hoping to get a few more responses!
Thanks Mike

Re: Different SRIS question
It is all but impossible to do the job at hand with the exhausts in place. There is just not ample room. Even if you get the hoses off, you will never get the back on. So bite the bullet and remove the pipes and service them correctly. And yes, you MUST drain the crankcase. Look what I got!

Hey Coyote,
I've seen your picture before, believe me! I'm beginning to think that I knew the answer all along was to pull off the exhausts but just didn't want to admit it.
Thanks and I want to thank you for all you add to this forum. This is a GREAT site thanks to people like you.

Re: Different SRIS question
If what you want to do is remove any oil thats built up in the lower end you can draw it off without removeing the SRIS valves . If you maybe already have a turkey injector or get one at the grocery store pull off the upper end of the black SRIS lines and attach the injector and draw off the oil and reattach the lines. .

Re: Different SRIS question
Now we're talking. That makes a lot of sense. I think I'll give that a try first and see what happens then. I do have a turkey injector...but with that idea in mind, I also have a hand pump system I use to bleed the brakes with. That might work even better.
I do want to remove all the oil I can at the bottom of the engine before first time start up. I'll see what happens after I get her running as far as any more checking of the SRIS valves.
Thanks suzukidave for the help.

Re: Different SRIS question
You can indeed get the hoses off and the SRIS valves out with the exhaust on and then put the hose back on.I have done so on my 74 and 77 with no problem.

Re: Different SRIS question
Success! It can be done, but as other members told me, it will "take some fiddling". Thanks to all who offered their advice and encouragement.
After I finally got the left hand one off, the hardest to reach, I couldn't get the screen to come out. I knew it was there as I could feel it with my handy, thin wire probe. What I did was to spray a bunch of carb cleaner into the opening and let it sit over night. The idea was to hopefully get some of the old oil to thin out and loosen up the screen. I did try using the kick starter to try and get it out but it didn't work. The next afternoon I took a look and lo and behold, there is the screen sitting halfway out of the opening. Guess I got lucky there.
The other 2 valves came out a lot quicker as they were easier to get to. And yes, there was a lot of old, messy oil draining out of all 3 openings.
So to all newbie Water Buffalo owners like me, it can be done. Just follow the advice from members here and you'll be just fine.
Thanks again to all who've helped me through this project.

Re: Different SRIS question
You guys can laugh all you want, but it worked! A quick blast of compressed air in the straw and the stuck SRIS pieces came right out. On the first try! (GT550)
