gt380 project in running working order!FINALLY!

Post by apoole6 »

Hey guys its been a while since I've been on here. Finally got my gt380 to get fuel through it and the timing was off so now left cylinder is firing. I took her for a cruise and I see why its called a tourer

Now two issues I have that I need help with 1) I put the sprocket cover on and as I ran it the neutral light didn't go off??? It worked before but now its not. 2) it seems to lug a lot to where I have to feather the clutch in gear and my speedo and tach I believe are not showing correct measurements?

Besides things like that im quite proud of myself because this is my first full from ground up restoration (especially a 3 cyl.) and it runs. I'd also like to thank you guys to on here!

The neutral light staying on might be because there is a single blue wire with a bullet on coming from the gear position indicator not plugged in. If correct, its under the left side cover and plugging it in will fix it.

May have been when I put the chain cover on might of crimped it by accident or something but besides small things like that the gt380 cruises smoothly. Kind of comfortable to for a 70s bike.

So when I start in first gear from a stop I have to rev it up a quite a bit to keep it bogging or feather the clutch. Is this normal for the gt380?? The clutch plates are still good when I checked them.

No, its not normal. The clutch seems to be dragging. I guess you tried adjusting it at both ends of the cable, and also under the left cover? if yes and it still drags, it maybe that the fingers in the clutch basket have wear marks and are stopping the plate stack from sliding smoothly. If its that, you can smooth those out a little to good effect.
Does this happen whether cold or hot? if cold only, it may be your oil is not of the recommended grade.
Cheers,
Mike

it happens when its cold and hot. Before I attempt to take off clutch cover should I try adjusting the clutch some? and im using Suzuki grade 10w40 oil if that's ok to put in it?

It's worth adjusting, if you have not yet done so. Until then you've no evidence there is a problem.

If your clutch basket looks anything like this, it needs gentle work with a file so that all the 'fingers' and centre splines are smooth otherwise the clutch will grab on take up and will tend to drag when pulled in.
Be gentle with the file and take off the minimum to make the fingers smooth, otherwise the clutch will 'chatter'.
When you fit the plates, the should go all the way in without snagging.

Well its not dragging when I pull the clutch in and shift to first. It just I guess "lags" some power taking off in first. According to a local Suzuki dealer(they were around to sell the gt's back then) said it could be the crank seals possibly since it bogs. Im not sure if it is or not it idles fine and pulls good towards mid to top. If I can recall to when I put the clutch basket in I did see some notches in the basket but not severe and I did replace springs with barnetts springs for the gt380.

As far as transmission oil goes will 10w40 be suitable or should I go with some higher end oil?

Your oil is fine. It sounds like carbs if it's weak off-idle. Try setting the pilot air screws a half a turn out less than in the manual. Or, perhaps the pilot circuits , jets and outlets are not totally clean?

If it starts easily and idles just fine, I doubt its the pilot circuit. Doesn't sound like bad crank seals either -- unless it smokes severely and constantly. Are the baffles clean? Start there. If you can't get rid of the bog with the pilot air screws then (and I KNOW what a big PITA it is) I would try raising the needles a notch for a richer mixture at low speeds.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.

The baffles are gummed up with old deposits plus they have rust holes eaten through the two outer ones. I did order a new set of outer pipes(or good used ones). I am running bel ray mc2 oil for the injection and read somewhere around here that it runs cleaner than other oils but it does blow blue smoke out the back and once it warms up its a very small amount. I turned the air screws out 1 turn also.
I mean could it be the nature of the gt380?? besides that it cruises like a dream!:D

Update: So I got some new plugs from the guy who sold me the bike(he runs a motorsports shop). Put in ngk b7es from the 8 and it seems like it gains speed a bit faster. He also had the old school NGK plug that was between 8 and 7 that he used to sell back in the day.
He runs his shop as a hobby and I can get stuff cheap from him and has a BUNCH of old spares and bikes too.
