GT500 Carb Tuning Requirements - Pod Filters & Stock Exhuast

Post by speedfreak »

I've been searching the board, but I'm having trouble finding the basic info I need. I'm looking for a simple answer to what I need for tuning with pod filters and stock exhaust. I read in one thread that the main jets should be fine, but just drop the needle one slot? Seems too simple...

I'll admit I'm not much of a carb tuner (yet). Just trying to wrap my head around it before I dig in.

No body has advice? :( I'm just looking for the basics of where to start - I'm pretty green on carbs. Should I plan on jets & major work, or would just pod filters mean a minor tweak? Help please!

Its possible there is little response as it is riding season eh ? :D In general, using the stock air box is better than going with pods if the engine is otherwise in stock tune using stock pipes as it is quieter and it smooths out the intake resonances you get with 2 strokes. Some pods are also better than others, and tuning will vary with what you are using - generally, going up at least one size on the main jet is common. 8)

Thanks Ian! So what is stock size on the GT500? I'm sure I could search for it, but now that I've got a response... :-) And one size up would be? I said I was green when it comes to carbs. Will I need to mess with the needle, or will that just be dictated by how it runs?

No problem - and indeed you can search for it easily ! :D On line copies of the manuals can be found at this link:

The stock main is 97.5, and as OJB says, some pods flow more than others. Melted pistons are a pain in the butt, so it's probably better to run a little rich than lean. Personally, i would start at 2 sizes up on the main, 102.5, and leave the rest as is. Try the old plug chop method to get some idea how the motor is working at full bore, before any prolonged thrashing.
Keeping old 2 strokes alive !
