Carb boots

Post by Barry S. »

I really need new carb boots between air box and carbs on my GT750, found these for about $31 each. Dealer wants $39 after 15% discount, Alpha Suzuki lists them at $41.65. Anybody ever deal with Powersports Plus or know of a cheaper price anywhere?

I buy from Power Sports Pro in Nebraska almost all the time (http://www.powersportspro.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) Confusingly similar name. :?

You could take a look at this listing 140870915824 - I have bought other items from Cruzinimage and for the most part have been happy (don't bother with their carb kits) and plan to buy at least one set of these just to see what they are like. 8)

Thanks for the tip, they were $2 apiece cheaper so I ordered them. Mine have shrunk till they won't stay on the rear of the carbs so I had to replace them. The ones on Ebay are the ones in front of the carbs, I need the ones between carb and airbox. They are listed as reproduction but look fine.

Reproductions are usually not reinforced. Most people misunderstand that the boots need replaced once they see a few cracks. Thinking the boots are soon to leak. That usually isn't the case. If they are quality oem boots, they are reinforced with fiberglass inside the rubber that usually won't allow them to crack completely through. Aftermarket boots are usually not reinforced. One reason, why they are so soft and cheaper. Take the boots off and take a look inside. They can last for a very long time, even after you see cracks on the exterior. But, if the current ones won't stay on the carbs. Then yeah, reproductions should get you by for a little while.

pearljam, you are absolutely correct on that one. I have tried to yell at people about this before. I took an old cracked one and put in my vise and folded it nearly in half. It cracked on both sides all the way to the liner, I suppose that is fiberglass. It looked more like heavy canvas to me. Bottom line though, there were no cracks on the inside after the test. very well thought out by the mother ship. The chance of cracks going all the through are a million to one.

Mine aren't cracked, they have shrunk and don't reach the carbs anymore.

A soaking in gasoline just might make them grow. Worked on a set of BS40's. The carbs were apart for a long time and the diaphragms shrunk so much they would no longer fit the groove in the top. One hour in gasoline and then they were too big! Had to let them air for a while. Kept an eye in them and when they were the correct size ---- on went the lid.

The GT750 airbox side boots seem to fail a lot faster than the intake ones. The airbox ones do get smaller and hard with age, and yes you can put them in gas and they will get soft and big.
However once the gasoline dries out they will go back to being small and hard again.
Some boots can get so hard you cannot squeeze them at all and they will simply break if you press on them hard enough.
Its just one of those things, and its time to replace them when they get hard or dont reach the airbox or bellmouth.
Two strokes, its just that simple.

Thanks to Ian I got new ones at a great price, nice and soft and fit like a glove. They should last me as long as I want to ride the bike.

Great news then on your purchase, unless you feel and see a new one you don't fully realize how hard and small the old ones have gotten.
Every Buffalo I have bought has had new boots fitted on it simply because the old ones were hard as rock, shrunken or just plain useless.
I just threw away the old ones for the airbox side of the 77 project build bike, they were so hard that when I stood on one it simply cracked in half.
