T500 questions

Post by racerd14666 »

so i just picked up a 74 t500 and after doing some reading on this site i got the no spark issue narrowed down, but the points are pretty worn and ones not closing completely and im not sure were to find them so i was wondering if i could swap a gt 550 ignition system in. and what are my options for front end swaps cus id like to run disc brakes preferable dual disk brakes in the front

I think you will find that points are still available from Suzuki - about $20 in USD per set.

i looked online (bike bandit, ebay and a few others) and called a local suzuki dealer and they said they were discontinued so i will have to keep looking, what about swapping a cdi ignition from a gs550 cus i have a parts bike that appears to have all the parts there but i dont know if they are a direct swap

you cant swap the cdi unit from the gt500 as the end of the crankshaft is different - new points are always available on good ole ebay for not much cash and I always keep a couple of spare sets in the tool roll just in case.Fired my t500l up this morning and it fired right up after the third kick - last time I started it was last October these bikes are very fussy about points settings so you need to get them spot on.

We are talking about part number 31440-15020 ? I've just checked four on-line parts listings and they all show the points as available as well as the condensers. Prices range from just under $20 in USD through to about $30. Bike Bandit has them for $24.68.

That's the sort of question for which there are many points of view - with this generation of 2 stroke engine design, I personally think a better question would be is there any gain ? And if not, then why bother other than for reasons' of esthetics, or possibly there not being any other choice due to original design parts no longer being available. I'm sure others will jump in ! 8)

I personally prefer the stock airboxes on bikes. Keeps things simple. No need to go thru the hassle of rejetting, plus the airbox is what supports the carbs from the back side. If you do go with pod filters, buy good ones, unless you like repairing worn out top ends. The cheapy chrome chinese jobs don't filter very well. Get the UNI or K&N filters.

the cost of sourcing parts is the main reason why im thinking about running pods, cus i need the manifold boots, the air box connecting boot and air filters. but if pods cause me to loose power i would pry just go with a stock setup

It's a cow of a job trying to get the jetting right for a T500 using pods instead of the original filter.

I ca't speak for the 500, but on my 550 there is no discernable difference - stock box or pods. I am running pods and chambers so re jeting was certainly required. Lots of guys add pods and don't change anything, but I would suggest going 1 size larger on the pilot jets. Pods seem to suck more air at low speeds, so the increase in pilot jets helps the situation.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left.
