Transmission countershaft
Hi again Guys,
Now I’m trying to understand the seal arraignment around the shaft that is hollow - to allow the clutch rod to pass through. I think what the parts fiche is calling the countershaft. Does that sound right? In any case, there are three different parts that make up this seal arraignment. I tore them all to shreds, not realizing what complex little arraignment it is. Going by the parts breakdown, I thought there was one simple seal there. Boy, was I wrong. I want to try to order all three parts, but I’m not at all clear from the parts fiche, and my Clymer manual, what that shaft is called or what those part #’s would be. Any ideas where I can get the correct info?

I'm assuming you're talking about the seal on the left side of the engine that the push rod passes through ??
If so, then it appears that your 3 individual parts are considered one item.....part number unknown, but #31 in the exploded parts view.
You'll need to find a sympathetic Suzuki parts guy who is willing to pull out his microfiche so you can have a closer look and retrieve the part number. Then the parts guy can see if it's still available. If it IS still available from Suzuki, I'd order it on the spot and take your lumps on the price.

So, are you saying that oil resevior plug (#31) is really all the three seals?
Babbitts online has a SKU # for it..

There are actually six seals in play here. #31 (24973-34000) is more of a spacer than a seal and is no longer available. Its the same as the blank plug on the GT750 - you just re-use the old one. If you look at the fiche for the clutch, what you need are three oil seals listed there: #19 (shows as '9' on most fiches as the '1' is missing, but its shown on the shaft between part #17 and #18) and is part #09285-08004, plus the dust seal for the cover #09285-08001, and then under the right side cover is a small seal #09284-10002. There is another small seal #09285-08003 also. These are all still available from Suzuki.
The one seal in the tranny that isn't available from Suzuki, and is hard to locate, is #09283-25050 which goes behind the drive sprocket. However, I think it is a 25x62x7 standard oil seal which may be available from a jobber (or an Arctic Cat dealer under part 501333
).

I have to admit to some confusion here, so here is a pic of the three seals i'm trying to get. Two of them seal on the clutch pushrod, and the other seals the imput (or whatever the shaft is that is hallow for the clutch rods to pass through). Are these some of the six you are refering too?

In the diagrams below, I've marked the seals with arrows.
The clutch push rods items 17 and 18 pass through the countershaft, item 2 in the upper diagram. Clear as mud ?

Nice job on the diagram Ian! Yes, it is a GT550. All of those smaller ones have been replaced and really should not be part of this discussion. The pic shows the three items I yanked out of the cases (which are now bolted together and mounted on the frame) while hoping to replace what I thought was a simple seal - like #'s 9 and 30. What also came out was the thing in the middle of my photo, which is a seal on the input shaft - that fits together with one of those other seals . Do you think that is the elusive # 31?

It doesn't look right - I think I have a scrap one somewhere, but can't recall where at the moment. Phew, you're still getting snow up there? I'd have to take the gas pipe if we were still getting snow.
Anyway, the more I investigate, the more I think what I destroyed was # 31 or 24973-34000. Not good as I can't find one anywhere. Any ideas out there about getting something to work?

Found it !
This is part 31 - it has two pieces to it which you can pull apart, but the whole thing is just one part number and as offered previously is no longer available. Notice the locator nub on the one side - opposite it is a locator pin hole. The whole thing is about 21mm deep/thick.

About 47mm wide.

It can be pulled apart - I have them flipped around from how you have them in your photo, but you can match up the bits.

Assuming you could find a good one, to properly install it would require splitting the cases because of the locators. You could try to bodge it - put the bits you have (I think the two shown in the middle and right of your photo) back in as best you can, with a new outboard oil seal (09140-22003) shown on the left of your photo I think, and hope for the best.
What I can't recall, is whether the drain slot goes up or down on the inboard side - perhaps someone else can comment.

You can have it for postage, but I'm not seeing how it would help you unless you are prepared to split the crankcase so you can properly set it with the locator pins. Without doing that I suspect the clutch rod action will eventually just work the spacer out and start it leaking again. We have some actual mechanics on the board who may be able to comment.
