I actually suspect a ballistic nylon gear will last longer than an aluminium one from a wear perspective, and will be quieter. And given all the other gears are cast iron, or steel I'm pretty sure if things did stop that the teeth would fly off that aluminium gear faster than a politician can make promises.GT750Battleship wrote:Hi Ian,what are your thoughts on the gear being made out of anything "but" plastic ?

Having said that - I will be installing a locally made aluminium gear that I've had for a while into my test mule machine (the blue 1976A) as I'm currently rebuilding the engine anyway due to a seal failure. I'll let you know if it causes problems !
It is still in the bike, but it is noisy. It was made locally by a machine shop called Cactus Machine, however the owner and the guy who actually made the gears (Roy Hansen) passed away recently and the place is harder to deal with as it is changing hands.Warehouse1001 wrote:Wondering if you still are using an aluminum gear?? And, if so and satisfied, where did you obtain it? Many thanks, Chuck
