Suzuki 2 Strokes

When the Gt 750 is running say whether it's a 10 mile or 50 mile it does NOT leak oil..bone dry underneath.
I'll let it sit say for 1/2 hour still dry..1 hr still dry.maybe 2 hrs later a very small drip..then over night a small puddle which is wiped up with a rag.
So why doesn't it leak while running , is it a vacuum thing when cooling down that cause the oil to be sucked past the seal?

No coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant

I have a new water pump ready to go in if needed.

That's an odd one. Transmission has no oil pump but I wonder if the oil level is effectively lower when it's running as oil wraps around the shafts and gears. As it sits, that oils slowly but inexorably falls back to the "sump" and starts to seep out.

That suggests that the oil seal is probably in need of replacement and the shaft may also be scored.

I would replace or rebuild the pump and check the oil level while you are there

I wonder if the coolant is heating the impeller shaft enough to expand it toward the case while the engine's running, temporarily stopping the leak? Either way I agree, that seal seems to be the prime suspect.

Mine's been dribbling a little oil too so I'll have to replace or have it rebuilt in the very near future. If I can get away from my other projects long enough that is.

Looks like the pump price has been elevated to $205 on Alphasports. Is rebuilding them becoming more cost effective?

That is what I do but I go through a lot of parts to make one good pump. It's amazing how worn/rusty/scored, damaged some shafts are.

I recently inherited a small collection of stripped pumps and I'd guess that 75% of the parts ended up in the trash or re-cycling bin. I think I kept 1 shaft and 3 bodies out of 4 pumps, so technically that's closer to 25%.

$205 for a new pump sounds reasonable to me. Especially if you consider the carbie boots on the 380 and 550 are $40 per, and you need 6!

Yeah I agree that's not too bad except when you consider they were $134 not too long ago. Seems the optimum time to buy is now before prices go up yet again. I'll likely buy new as I'm not comfortable rebuilding one first try then hoping it doesn't let me down on a road trip. $40 per doesn't sound bad but, yeah, when you multiply by 3 carbs it really adds up quick. Thanks for the comments.

No. I bought a couple of bikes from John Fry and they came with a few spares that I am sorting through. John had collected a few GTs and I think he also had some that came from Gordon Lamb. That's what I'm sorting through and so far a truck load has gone to re-cycling. I'm working through the rest slowly.

When I started rebuilding the motor is one of the bikes, that was the time to sort through my water pumps plus one I had been given plus the new ones and there were lots of damaged shafts and old bearings that are now being melted down and made into something useful.

I think he also had some that came from Gordon Lamb.

Gordon Lamb? That goes back a ways TZ. Met Gordon once when he stopped by to pick up a scrap 400 for Lane. At the time he also had a GT380 on his trailer that he was delivering to Adam in Arkansas.
The drilled rotors on my 550 cafe came from Gordon.

The (77 B) cafe is just a little worn out and will need a fair amount of work to bring it back to its prime, and while it's apart I may make some changes to perk it up a little. JF and GL seemed to like gray ghosts, but I need bright colors. I'm partial to white or gold wheels, red or silver frames and black engines so anything is possible. JF was very generous and genuine in our discussions/negotiations. He just had too much stuff..

I have almost finished sinking a ton of hours and dollars into the red bike and it is putting up a good fight but I like to think that I'm winning. Today I had it running sweetly and it picks up revs nicely too.

It now has GS mag style wheels with drum rear, new tires and chain and the electrics are completely reworked. Motor was stripped to the last component and rebuilt with new pistons etc. It has Newtronics (off the Cafe) and an ignition circuit relay and lots of new connectors and terminals and other components. It's all shiny and clean and not looking over restored which I don't go for. This one will look original and clean and should run nicely. Just the seat and tank to finish and then road test it. - I hope....

You've been busy! It sounds like they went to the right person. I always thought John's gray café was an L. Maybe the engine was from a '74? I'm not admitting defeat just yet. Will you be keeping these orphans for your collection or are they getting new homes?

76 Red will go to a new home in January if everything works out according to plan and we know how often that happens right?

Gray Cafe is a number matching 77 with the correct B style V crankcases. I can't ride all the projects I had before this double wide trailer load was dragged back to IL.

But,this lot gives me choices as to what to build and how it will look etc. That way i get to try every shape of GT that I can think of. Traditional Cafe racer through to modern looking sport bike and maybe even drag racer in the mold of those crazy superstreet type bikes that run 8.8 second quarter miles. This will never do that but it might look like it could..
